Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026

These are the two strongest tools in the category and they disagree about what a developer wants. Cursor keeps you in the editor: you see suggestions as you type, accept them with a keystroke, and the AI is continuous but incremental. Claude Code keeps you in the terminal: you describe a change, it explores, plans, edits across files, runs the tests and reports back. In our testing Claude Code completed feature-sized tasks with less intervention, while Cursor produced a faster, lower-friction experience for the ordinary business of writing code line by line. Neither is wrong — they suit different temperaments and different tasks. The pragmatic answer, and the one a striking number of our reviewers have arrived at independently, is to run both: Cursor for the typing, Claude Code for the tickets. At $20 each that is cheaper than a single seat of most enterprise alternatives, and the two do not conflict because one lives in the editor and the other in the shell.
