Supporters already had accounts

Used weekly for 2+ years

For a podcast audience, Patreon is the expected place. People pledge without thinking about it because they already trust the checkout, and I have never dealt with a currency or a failed card myself.

Pros

Zero payment friction. Discovery brings a trickle of members I did not find myself.

Cons

The 8% fee is the largest single cost in my business.

Problems it solves

Recurring income from an audience without building any of the infrastructure.

Moved off it once the fees passed the alternatives

Used monthly for 2+ years

At $6,000 a month the 8% fee was $480. Circle Professional is $99 with zero fees. Migration cost us about 15% of members, and we were still ahead within two months.

Pros

Excellent starting point when revenue is small.

Cons

Percentage fees mean the cost grows exactly as your business does.

Members wanted to talk to each other and could not

Used weekly for 1–2 years

It is a broadcast channel with comments. My audience wanted discussion, sub-groups and a place to help each other. Patreon has none of that, so we run Patreon for payments and a separate community elsewhere.

Pros

Payments and tiers are flawless.

Cons

Not a community platform in any meaningful sense.
