“Our automation bill became a fixed cost”

Used daily for 1–2 years

We were running about 1.4 million operations a month and the cloud quotes were eye-watering. Self-hosted n8n on a modest VM handles it for the price of the VM. Six months in, the only cost has been my time on two upgrades.

Pros

No per-execution fees. Code nodes mean we never hit a ceiling. Data never leaves our VPC.

Cons

You are the operator. Upgrades occasionally break a community node and you fix it.

Problems it solves

Turned a five-figure annual automation bill into a server we already had.

“Data residency made the decision for us”

Used daily for 6–12 months

Financial services, so customer data leaving our infrastructure was simply not permitted. That removed every cloud option in one line. n8n self-hosted was the only tool that met the requirement and was still pleasant to build in.

Pros

Air-gapped deployment. Enterprise tier added the SSO and audit trail compliance wanted.

Cons

Getting it production-ready with HA took our platform team about three weeks.
