Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Self-hosted community edition has no per-execution fees at all

  2. Any node can drop into JavaScript or Python without leaving the workflow

  3. The most flexible AI and agent nodes in this category

  4. Self-hosting means you own uptime, upgrades and scaling

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 24, 2026

n8n is the answer to two questions the other tools cannot address: what if our data cannot leave our infrastructure, and what if per-operation pricing has become absurd. The self-hosted community edition runs on your own server with no execution fees, which at high volume changes the economics completely — teams running millions of operations a month describe automation cost as effectively fixed.

As a product it sits pleasantly between no-code and code. The visual builder handles the ordinary cases, and any node can drop into JavaScript or Python when the drag-and-drop runs out — no need to abandon the workflow and rewrite it as a script. Its AI and agent nodes are the most flexible in this category, and the community node ecosystem fills integration gaps quickly.

The costs are the ones you would expect from self-hosting. Somebody owns uptime, upgrades, backups and scaling; that person's time is not free and the community edition's licence restricts some commercial resale scenarios. Reviewers without a platform team consistently report the maintenance burden outweighing the savings, and the cloud edition — which removes that burden — is priced comparably to Make rather than dramatically below it.

Our guidance: choose n8n if you have infrastructure people, data-residency requirements, or volume high enough that per-operation pricing hurts. Without at least one of those three, Make gives you most of the capability with none of the operational load.

Our automation bill became a fixed cost

Used daily for 1–2 years

We were running about 1.4 million operations a month and the cloud quotes were eye-watering. Self-hosted n8n on a modest VM handles it for the price of the VM. Six months in, the only cost has been my time on two upgrades.

Data residency made the decision for us

Used daily for 6–12 months

Financial services, so customer data leaving our infrastructure was simply not permitted. That removed every cloud option in one line. n8n self-hosted was the only tool that met the requirement and was still pleasant to build in.

Underestimated the ops work

Used weekly for 6–12 months

Self-hosted it to save money, then spent a weekend on a failed upgrade and another on queue mode. Genuinely good software; I just was not the right operator for it. Moved to their cloud tier and stopped worrying.
