Visual automation with real logic

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Visual canvas with routers, iterators and per-module error handling

  2. Commonly a third to a fifth of Zapier's cost for the same workflows

  3. Steeper learning curve — expect a week, not an afternoon

  4. App library is large but behind Zapier; verify your stack before committing

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 18, 2026

Make is the better automation product and the cheaper one; Zapier beats it only on coverage and first-day simplicity. The canvas is the difference — you see the whole workflow as a diagram, branch with routers, iterate over arrays properly, and attach error handlers to individual modules. Anyone who has tried to express real business logic in a linear step list will recognise immediately why this matters.

The economics are lopsided in Make's favour. Operations are cheaper than Zapier tasks and the included volumes are far larger, so the same workflows commonly cost a third to a fifth as much. For teams running high-volume automation that difference is thousands a year, and it is the single most common reason our reviewers migrated.

The costs are learning curve and library size. The canvas rewards a mental model of data flowing through modules, and people who never build that model find it confusing rather than powerful — expect a week rather than an afternoon. The app library is large but noticeably behind Zapier's, so check your specific stack first. Error messages are also less clear than they should be when a mapping is wrong.

Our guidance: choose Make if your automations have real branching, your volume is meaningful, and someone on the team enjoys building things. Choose Zapier if the priority is that anyone can maintain it.

Same automations, a fifth of the price

Used daily for 1–2 years

Migrated eleven workflows from Zapier over a fortnight. The rebuild was real work — the canvas is a different way of thinking — but our monthly automation bill went from about £400 to £80 and the branching logic is cleaner than it ever was before.

Powerful, unforgiving about data shapes

Used daily for 6–12 months

When it works it is a joy. When a mapping is wrong the error tells you almost nothing useful and you are clicking through execution history guessing. Budget debugging time until you know its habits.

Great for us, wrong for the client to maintain

Used weekly for 1–2 years

We build client automations in Make because it is cheaper and more capable. The handover is the problem — clients cannot maintain a canvas, and we end up on a retainer. For anything the client must own themselves we still use Zapier.
