“Bought for the deployment model, not the code quality”
Used daily for 1–2 years
We are a financial institution and our code does not leave our infrastructure. That single constraint eliminated every other product we looked at. Tabnine runs on our own hardware and passed the security review. The completions are decent. If I could use Cursor I probably would, but I cannot.
Pros
On-premises deployment that actually works. Zero retention. Compliance documentation was ready for our auditors.
Cons
Expensive. Output is noticeably weaker than the cloud tools I use at home.
Problems it solves
Gave 200 developers AI assistance inside a network that permits no external calls.

“The licence provenance argument won our legal review”
Used daily for 1–2 years
Our counsel’s objection to AI coding tools was never security, it was whether copyleft code could end up in our proprietary product. Tabnine training only on permissively licensed repositories is a checkable answer to that. It is the reason we have any AI tooling at all.
Pros
Model provenance is documented and verifiable. Governance controls are mature. Connects to our self-managed GitLab.
Cons
Cost is hard to defend against $10 Copilot seats when you are not the one explaining it to legal.
Problems it solves
Removed the IP contamination objection that had blocked adoption for a year.

“Fine, but I would not pay this from my own budget”
Used daily for 6–12 months
Used it for eight months at a previous employer. It works, the enterprise features are real, and every day I wished I had Cursor instead. Unless the deployment story is the reason you are buying, you are paying a large premium for compliance you may not need.
Pros
Solid completions, real enterprise controls, responsive support.
Cons
Six times the price of Copilot for worse code. No free tier to test with.
