Tabnine

AI code assistance that runs inside your own infrastructure

  • Tabnine Ltd. · Israel
  • Since 2018

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Full on-premises and air-gapped deployment, not just a VPC option

  2. Protected models trained only on permissively licensed code, lowering IP risk

  3. Zero code retention, with SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance

  4. The most expensive product in the category, and output quality is good, not exceptional

Our verdict

Updated Aug 29, 2026Fact-checked Aug 16, 2026

Tabnine is not competing on raw code quality and does not pretend to. It is competing on the deployment question, and there it has an answer nobody else here fully matches: run the whole thing inside your own network, air-gapped if necessary, with models that were trained only on permissively licensed code. For a defence contractor, a bank or a medical device company, that is not a preference — it is the entire buying criterion, and it removes most of this category from consideration before quality is even discussed.

The licence provenance point deserves more attention than it usually gets. Tabnine's protected models are trained exclusively on permissively licensed repositories, which means the output carries a materially lower risk of reproducing copyleft code into a proprietary product. Legal teams who have thought about this care about it a great deal, and it is one of the few technical claims in this category that is genuinely checkable.

What you pay for that is money and capability. At $39 per user per month for the assistant platform and $59 for the agentic one, this is the most expensive product in the category by a distance — three to six times Copilot — and the code it writes is good rather than exceptional. Reviewers who came from Cursor or Claude Code consistently describe a step down in output quality. There is no free tier to evaluate on, and self-hosted deployment is a project rather than an install.

Our guidance: if you can use a cloud assistant, something else here will serve you better for less. If you cannot, Tabnine is probably your answer and the price is the cost of being able to buy anything at all.

Bought for the deployment model, not the code quality

Used daily for 1–2 years

We are a financial institution and our code does not leave our infrastructure. That single constraint eliminated every other product we looked at. Tabnine runs on our own hardware and passed the security review. The completions are decent. If I could use Cursor I probably would, but I cannot.

The licence provenance argument won our legal review

Used daily for 1–2 years

Our counsel’s objection to AI coding tools was never security, it was whether copyleft code could end up in our proprietary product. Tabnine training only on permissively licensed repositories is a checkable answer to that. It is the reason we have any AI tooling at all.

Fine, but I would not pay this from my own budget

Used daily for 6–12 months

Used it for eight months at a previous employer. It works, the enterprise features are real, and every day I wished I had Cursor instead. Unless the deployment story is the reason you are buying, you are paying a large premium for compliance you may not need.
