What is Tabnine?
Tabnine is an AI coding assistant for software teams, made by Tabnine, an Israeli company that Tricentis, a maker of software testing tools, announced it had acquired on July 30, 2026. It works inside the developer's editor. Completions appear as you type, from a single line to a whole function or code written from a comment. Tabnine Chat answers questions about the codebase and generates code, and Tabnine Agent carries out larger tasks such as refactoring across a codebase, writing tests and documenting code, stopping to ask for approval when a step needs it. A command-line tool brings the agent to the terminal.
It supports VS Code, JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm, Eclipse, and Visual Studio 2022 and 2026 on Windows. Companies connect GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket so answers can draw on code across the organization while each user sees only repositories they already have access to. A Jira integration lets a developer ask Tabnine to implement an assigned issue or check code against its requirements. Administrators decide which models are available: Tabnine's own models, trained only on permissively licensed open-source code, or third-party models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others.
Tabnine runs as a hosted service, in a company's own cloud account on GCP, AWS or Azure, on the company's own servers, or fully air-gapped; the private options are for Enterprise customers. Tabnine says code is processed only to answer a request and then discarded. Prices are not published, and tabnine.com now redirects to Tricentis.

Tabnine is built for organizations whose first question about an AI assistant is where their code goes. It can run entirely inside a company's network, air-gapped if needed, and its own models are trained only on permissively licensed open-source code and never on customer code, which matters to legal and security teams worried about code leaving the company or licensed code turning up in suggestions. Administrators control which models developers can use, Enterprise customers can have Tabnine's models fine-tuned on their own code, and one product covers completions, chat, agent work and Jira-driven tasks across VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse and Visual Studio.
Those protections are strongest when developers stay on Tabnine's own models. Third-party models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are available, but Tabnine's documentation warns that their privacy and protection policies may differ. A private deployment also means running a Kubernetes cluster in your own cloud or data center, which is an infrastructure project rather than a plugin install. The larger open question is the product's future. Tricentis said it will fold Tabnine's Enterprise Context Engine into its own quality engineering platform, and its announcement does not say how the stand-alone assistant will be sold or developed.
Tabnine does not publish prices. Its pricing page now redirects to a Tricentis contact form, so cost comes only by quote. The current documentation describes Enterprise subscriptions in two forms, a secure SaaS setup and a private installation in a VPC or on-premises, and lists no free plan. Most buyers will start with the SaaS form unless their rules require a private installation, and a private installation adds infrastructure and staff time on top of the license. A written commitment from Tricentis on support and product updates should be part of any contract.
Choose Tabnine when code cannot leave your network, when the provenance of a model's training data is a buying requirement, or when developers work in JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse or Visual Studio rather than only VS Code. A team that can use a cloud service and mainly needs help reviewing pull requests should look at CodeRabbit, which reviews every pull request on GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps and Bitbucket and publishes its per-developer prices.

How much does Tabnine cost?

Can Tabnine run on-premises or air-gapped?
Yes. Tabnine offers four deployment options: a secure SaaS service hosted by Tabnine; a VPC deployment, where Tabnine runs as a Kubernetes cluster in your own GCP, AWS or Azure account; an on-premises Kubernetes cluster on your own servers; and a fully air-gapped installation cut off from outside networks. In the last three, the models and your code stay inside your infrastructure. The private options are available to Enterprise customers only.
Does Tabnine train AI models on your code?
No. Tabnine says its code completion model and its Protected chat model are trained only on open-source code with permissive licenses, and that code sent for a suggestion is discarded as soon as the answer is returned. Enterprise customers can have private models fine-tuned on their own code, which only their team can use. Third-party models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others are also offered, and Tabnine notes their privacy and protection policies may differ, so administrators can limit which ones are available.
Which IDEs does Tabnine support?
Tabnine fully supports VS Code, JetBrains IDEs built on the IntelliJ Platform (including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, PhpStorm, Android Studio, GoLand, CLion, Rider and RustRover), Eclipse, and Visual Studio 2022 and 2026 on Windows. Plugins for other editors are either legacy plugins without the advanced completions or chat, or unofficial community plugins. Tabnine also has a command-line tool for terminal work, which requires Tabnine Agents to be enabled for your team.
What does the Tricentis acquisition mean for Tabnine?
Tricentis, a maker of software testing tools, announced on July 30, 2026 that it had acquired Tabnine and would integrate Tabnine's Enterprise Context Engine into its quality engineering platform. The announcement does not say how the stand-alone coding assistant will be sold or developed. Tabnine's website now redirects to Tricentis, while its product documentation remains online.
