JetBrains AI

AI Assistant and the Junie agent, inside your JetBrains IDE

  • JetBrains s.r.o. · Czech Republic
  • Since 2023

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. The only assistant here built on a real static-analysis index, not just text

  2. Noticeably stronger multi-file refactoring in Java and Kotlin

  3. AI Pro is included at no extra cost with an All Products Pack subscription

  4. Credit-based pricing is unpredictable; Junie consumes AI Pro’s quota quickly

Our verdict

Updated Aug 29, 2026Fact-checked Aug 17, 2026

If your team lives in JetBrains IDEs, this is the option that does not ask anyone to change how they work. That matters more than it sounds. The competing recommendation in this category is usually "move to a VS Code fork", which is a fortnight of lost muscle memory for a Java or Kotlin team with a decade of IntelliJ habits. JetBrains AI installs into the IDE they already have and inherits everything that IDE already knows.

The static analysis is the genuine technical differentiator. Every other tool here reasons about your code as text; IntelliJ has a real index of types, call hierarchies and usages, and the AI can use it. In our testing that produced noticeably better multi-file refactoring in Java and Kotlin — renames that followed the call graph rather than pattern-matching, and suggestions that respected types the model could not have inferred from the visible file. Junie, the agent, is competent rather than class-leading, but it works where your project already builds and tests.

The pricing is the sore point, and reviewers say so consistently. AI credits are consumed by agent and chat usage at roughly a dollar a credit, and AI Pro's ten credits do not go far once Junie is doing real work — several reviewers describe burning a month's quota in days and then facing the jump to AI Ultimate at $30. Completion itself runs on JetBrains' own models and does not consume quota, which softens it, but the model is harder to predict than a flat subscription. AI Pro is included free with an All Products Pack, which many JetBrains teams already hold.

Our guidance: the clear choice for JetBrains shops, especially Java and Kotlin ones. Check whether your existing All Products Pack already includes AI Pro before buying anything, and budget for Ultimate if you intend to use Junie seriously.

Nobody had to leave IntelliJ, which was the point

Used daily for 6–12 months

We evaluated Cursor and the honest blocker was twelve Java engineers with ten years of IntelliJ muscle memory. JetBrains AI gave us most of the benefit and none of the disruption. The refactoring suggestions are better than Copilot’s in Java because the IDE actually knows the types.

Good assistant, confusing bill

Used daily for 6–12 months

The product is solid. The pricing is the part I resent — I burned a month of AI Pro credits in about five days of normal Junie use and then had to decide between topping up and upgrading. Completion is unlimited and free, which is the part I use most, so it worked out. But I should not have had to work that out myself.

On-premises was the requirement and it met it

Used daily for 6–12 months

Regulated environment, no code to third-party clouds. The enterprise deployment runs inside our estate and satisfied a security review that stopped two other tools. Slower to set up than a SaaS product, and worth it for us.
