Overview

What is JetBrains AI?

JetBrains AI is the set of AI features built into the IDEs made by JetBrains, a Czech company founded in 2000. It works in IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, PhpStorm, Rider, CLion, RubyMine, RustRover, DataGrip and DataSpell, and is also available in Android Studio and ReSharper.

As you type, the IDE completes single lines or whole blocks in your project's style, and next edit suggestions move you to the next place that may need a change; both run on JetBrains' own models. Larger jobs go to AI Chat, where you pick an agent: JetBrains' own Junie, Claude Agent, Codex, which JetBrains made the recommended default in June 2026, or GitHub Copilot, and any agent that supports the Agent Client Protocol can be added. The agent plans the work, edits files, runs commands and tests and reports progress, and you keep or roll back its changes. Junie works through the IDE's semantic index, build configuration, test runners and debugger, and is also available as a command-line tool. AI Assistant also explains code and writes documentation, tests, commit messages and pull request summaries.

Usage is billed in AI credits worth $1 each, renewed every 30 days. Chat and agents used through the JetBrains AI service spend them; completion and next edit suggestions do not, and neither do your own API keys, local models run through Ollama or LM Studio, or agents signed in with your own provider account. The paid tiers need a paid JetBrains IDE license, sold separately, and organizations share their credits in one pool.

JetBrains AI is aimed at teams already working in JetBrains IDEs who want AI without changing editors. Completion and next edit suggestions run on JetBrains' own models and use no credits, so everyday completion costs nothing beyond the plan. AI Chat offers a choice of agents: Junie works through the IDE's semantic index, build setup, test runners and debugger, while Codex, Claude Agent and GitHub Copilot run in the same panel. AI Enterprise lets companies with strict data rules send requests to Azure OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or their own on-premises server.

Credits are the weak point. AI Pro's 10 credits every 30 days amount to $10 of cloud model usage, a small budget for agents that read and edit many files, and JetBrains publishes no fixed cost per request. Top-ups at $1 a credit, valid for 12 months, keep work going but make the bill variable. The license requirement adds cost for anyone not already paying JetBrains, and AI Free is unavailable in IntelliJ IDEA without an Ultimate subscription, in PyCharm without Pro and in Android Studio. On non-commercial licenses, detailed data sharing is on by default, and that data, which can include code snippets and prompts, is used to train JetBrains' own models.

For individuals, AI Pro costs $10 a month, or $8.33 a month billed yearly, and is included with the All Products Pack and dotUltimate. Regular agent users should budget for AI Ultimate at $30 a month, or $25 a month billed yearly, which carries 35 credits. For organizations, AI Pro costs $20 per user a month, or $16.67 billed yearly, with 20 credits per license, and AI Ultimate costs $60 per user a month, or $50 billed yearly, with 70; admins can cap each person's monthly spend from the shared pool. AI Enterprise costs $60 per user a month, billed annually through sales.

Choose JetBrains AI if your developers live in JetBrains IDEs and want completion included and a choice of agents. If you need one assistant across JetBrains IDEs and other editors such as VS Code, Visual Studio or Xcode, GitHub Copilot covers all of them, with Business at $19 per user a month and 1,900 pooled AI credits per user.

Is JetBrains AI free?

Partly. AI Free gives 3 AI credits every 30 days, cannot be topped up and needs an active JetBrains IDE license; it is not available in IntelliJ IDEA without an Ultimate subscription, in PyCharm without a Pro subscription or in Android Studio. Code completion and next edit suggestions do not use credits. A 30-day AI Pro trial is offered when you first activate JetBrains AI, and AI Pro is included with the All Products Pack. How do JetBrains AI credits work?

One AI credit is worth $1, and each plan adds a fixed number every 30 days: 3 on AI Free, 10 on AI Pro and 35 on AI Ultimate for individuals. Chat and agents used through the JetBrains AI service spend credits; completion, next edit suggestions, your own API keys, local models and agents signed in with your own provider account do not. When credits run out you can wait for the reset, buy top-ups at $1 a credit that stay valid for 12 months, upgrade or switch to your own provider.

Does JetBrains AI train on your code?

Only if detailed data sharing is on. JetBrains uses shared data, which can include code snippets, prompts and AI responses, to improve its tools and train its own models such as Mellum, and says it never shares that data with third parties. Sharing is off by default on commercial licenses, can only be enabled by an admin on organization licenses, and is on by default on non-commercial licenses, where you can turn it off under Settings, Appearance & Behavior, System Settings, Data Sharing.

Which AI agents can you use in JetBrains IDEs?

AI Chat has four integrated agents: JetBrains' own Junie, Claude Agent, Codex and GitHub Copilot, with Codex the recommended default since June 2026. Any agent that supports the Agent Client Protocol can be added too, and it can run without a JetBrains AI subscription. Claude Agent and Codex can use your own API key, and Codex and GitHub Copilot can sign in with your provider account, in which case they do not spend JetBrains credits.

Do you need a JetBrains IDE license to use JetBrains AI?

Yes for the paid tiers. AI Pro and AI Ultimate are sold on top of a paid JetBrains IDE license, and AI Enterprise is part of JetBrains IDE Services. AI Free also needs an active IDE license and excludes IntelliJ IDEA without Ultimate, PyCharm without Pro and Android Studio.
