How I learned whether I wanted this at all

Used daily for 6–12 months

I was sceptical about AI editors and unwilling to pay to find out. The free tier let me use it properly for three weeks on real work before deciding. That is the right way to sell this category and nobody else does it as well.

Pros

Free tier is a real product. Cascade follows what I was just doing instead of starting from scratch each time.

Cons

Indexing our main repo is slower than colleagues report on Cursor.

Problems it solves

Answered the "is this worth paying for" question without spending anything.

Good product, uneasy about the company

Used daily for 1–2 years

Cascade is genuinely competitive and $15 is fair. But we are standardising a twelve-person team on a tool and the acquisition drama last year made that a harder case to argue internally than it should have been. We stayed; two people on my team switched anyway.

Pros

Strong agent, clean interface, sensible price.

Cons

Ownership upheaval hurt confidence. Smaller ecosystem than the VS Code forks.

Right choice for a solo consultant

Used daily for 6–12 months

I bill by the project so a $5 monthly saving compounds. Windsurf does 90% of what the expensive option does for two thirds of the price, and for the work I do — small codebases, lots of greenfield — that last 10% has not come up.

Pros

Price. Fast on small and medium projects. Preview and deploy built in.

Cons

I would probably want something stronger on a large legacy codebase.
