Windsurf

The agentic IDE that keeps you in flow

  • Windsurf (formerly Codeium) · United States
  • Since 2024

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. The most generous free tier in the category — a real editor, not a demo

  2. Cascade tracks what you have just done and infers intent from it

  3. Pro at $15/mo undercuts Cursor by a quarter

  4. Ownership upheaval in 2025 cost it momentum; several reviewers left over it

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Aug 1, 2026

Windsurf is the best way to find out whether an AI editor suits you without spending anything. Its free tier is the most generous here — a real editor with real agent access rather than a crippled demo — and Cascade, its agent, is genuinely good at following what you are doing across files and terminals.

At $15 a month Pro undercuts Cursor, and for many developers the capability difference does not justify the gap. Cascade's flow awareness is a real differentiator: it tracks your recent actions and infers intent from them rather than treating every request as isolated, which produces fewer "you have ignored what I just did" moments than rivals.

The caveats are commercial rather than technical. The company went through a widely-reported acquisition and leadership departure during 2025, and while the product has continued shipping, several of our reviewers cite that instability as the reason they moved to Cursor. Codebase indexing on very large repositories is also a step behind, and the extension ecosystem is smaller than a VS Code fork's.

Our guidance: start on the free tier — it is the cheapest way to learn whether this style of tool works for you. If you like it and want maximum capability, compare against Cursor before committing; if the price difference matters and Cascade suits your workflow, staying is a perfectly good decision.

How I learned whether I wanted this at all

Used daily for 6–12 months

I was sceptical about AI editors and unwilling to pay to find out. The free tier let me use it properly for three weeks on real work before deciding. That is the right way to sell this category and nobody else does it as well.

Good product, uneasy about the company

Used daily for 1–2 years

Cascade is genuinely competitive and $15 is fair. But we are standardising a twelve-person team on a tool and the acquisition drama last year made that a harder case to argue internally than it should have been. We stayed; two people on my team switched anyway.

Right choice for a solo consultant

Used daily for 6–12 months

I bill by the project so a $5 monthly saving compounds. Windsurf does 90% of what the expensive option does for two thirds of the price, and for the work I do — small codebases, lots of greenfield — that last 10% has not come up.
