from our research

  1. Browser-based multiplayer editing removed file-version problems entirely

  3. Dev Mode closes the designer-to-engineer handoff gap

  4. Audit seat types before renewal — editor vs dev vs collaborator pricing has changed repeatedly

Our verdict

Updated Aug 12, 2026Fact-checked Feb 19, 2026

Figma won this category and continues to deserve it. The reason is not any single feature but the removal of an entire class of problem: there is one file, it lives in the browser, everyone is in it at once, and there is no version to email anyone.

The component and variable system is what keeps it there. Design systems built in Figma stay coherent across dozens of files and contributors in a way that file-based tools never managed. Prototyping covers most interaction needs without a second tool. Dev Mode gives engineers measurements, tokens and code snippets from the same source of truth, which closes the handoff gap that used to consume days per release. And because it runs in any browser, the design review that used to require a licensed Mac now requires a link.

The costs are seat costs. Full editor seats run about $16 per month billed annually on Professional, with Organization at $45 and Enterprise at $75 for design-system and security controls. Figma has restructured seat types more than once, and teams have been caught out by the difference between Collaborator, Dev and Full seats — audit who actually needs to edit before renewal. Performance on very large files still degrades, and non-designers find the blank canvas intimidating in a way Canva’s templates avoid.

Our guidance: for any team designing software, Figma is the default and alternatives need a specific justification. For marketing collateral produced by non-designers, buy Canva instead — and note that many companies rightly run both.

Removed an entire category of problem

Used daily for 2+ years

No more "final_v3_actually_final". One file, everyone in it, engineers inspecting the same source of truth designers are editing. Our design system stayed coherent across four squads, which never happened with file-based tools.

Audit your seat types before renewal

Used weekly for 2+ years

We were paying full editor seats for people who only ever commented. Reclassifying them cut our bill by a third. The seat model has changed more than once, so this is worth checking annually.

From an engineer: Dev Mode is the part that matters

Used daily for 1–2 years

I do not design, I implement. Getting measurements, tokens and asset exports without asking anyone is the single biggest time saving in my front-end workflow in years.

Wrong tool for our marketing team

Used monthly for 1–2 years

We gave two non-designers Figma seats and got unused licences plus off-brand output. Moved them to Canva and the work improved immediately. Figma is superb for the people it is built for.
