Linear is the best project management tool for software teams in 2026 — and it wins by refusing to be everything. Every interaction is keyboard-first and effectively instant; creating, triaging and closing issues is so frictionless that backlog hygiene stops being a chore. Cycles (sprints), Projects and Initiatives map cleanly onto how product teams actually plan, and the GitHub/GitLab integration closes issues from commits without configuration.

The free plan (unlimited members, 250 active issues) lets a whole startup adopt it before paying; Basic at $8/user/month lifts the caps and Business at $14 adds Insights analytics, triage SLAs and guest-adjacent workarounds via Slack. That pricing undercuts Asana and monday.com at comparable tiers.

Know what you are not getting. There are no Gantt charts, no native time tracking, no client guest access and workload views are absent — Linear assumes a trusted product team, not an agency juggling stakeholders. Marketing and ops teams usually bounce off it. We have run Jira, Shortcut and Asana. Linear is the only one where updating a ticket costs nothing — cmd+K, two keystrokes, done. Cycle reports write our sprint review for us. The opinionated model is the feature: fewer knobs, more shipping.

Is Linear only for engineering teams?

Effectively, yes — and deliberately. Product, design and engineering teams thrive in it; marketing and ops teams typically bounce off the sprint-and-issue model, the absence of Gantt views and the lack of guest access. The common successful pattern: engineering runs Linear, the wider company runs Asana or Notion, connected via integrations. Forcing the whole company into Linear is the source of most of its negative reviews.

Can Linear replace Jira?

For most startups and mid-sized product teams, yes — switchers in our reviews consistently report faster triage, happier engineers and no missed capability. Linear imports Jira projects directly. The exceptions: organizations that need Jira’s deep workflow customization, on-prem hosting, or ecosystem plugins (test management, ITSM). Above ~500 engineers evaluate carefully; below that, the migration is usually a weekend and a relief.
