Our verdict
The deciding difference is how much of yourself each account asks for. Mullvad generates an account number instead of asking for an email or any personal details, accepts cash by post and cryptocurrencies such as Monero, and charges a flat €5 a month with no introductory rate and no renewal increase. Proton VPN offers more around the VPN: a free plan with no data cap, more than 20,000 servers in over 140 countries against Mullvad's 566 in 50, and 10 devices on VPN Plus against Mullvad's 5, with P2P and secure streaming included. VPN Plus costs $9.99 a month, or $53.88 for the first year, renewing at $83.88 a year. Both back their privacy claims with outside checks: Securitum has audited Proton's no-logs policy every year from 2022 to 2026, and Assured AB's 2022 audit of Mullvad servers found no logging of customer data. Choose Mullvad if keeping your identity out of the account comes first, and Proton VPN for more devices, more countries and a free plan to start on.
