Devin is the only product here that is meant to be delegated to rather than used. You do not open Devin; you assign it a ticket and it opens a pull request some time later. That is a genuinely different working model, and it changes what the tool is good at. Ten small, well-described tickets running in parallel while you work on something hard is a real multiplier. One large ambiguous ticket is where it fails, and where most of the disappointed writing about it comes from.
The integrations are what make the model work in practice. Devin lives in Slack, Linear and Jira rather than in an editor, so assigning work to it feels like assigning work to a person, and the pull request arrives in the normal review flow. For teams with a long tail of dependency bumps, small bug fixes, test coverage gaps and migration chores, that tail can be worked in the background continuously — and that, rather than the original autonomy demos, is what teams who keep paying actually use it for.
The pricing changed the conversation. The original $500 a month put it out of reach; $20 to start with pay-as-you-go ACUs at $2.25 does not. But ACUs are the thing to model carefully, because a task that goes badly consumes them without producing anything, and a supervised session costs the same as an unsupervised one. Reviewers who are happy with Devin invariably describe a discipline: scope tightly, review everything, kill sessions that wander. Reviewers who are unhappy describe handing it something vague and paying for the privilege.
Our guidance: worth trialling at $20 if you have a genuine backlog of small well-specified work. Not the tool to reach for on your hard problems, and not a replacement for an engineer regardless of what the original launch implied.

“It cleared a backlog nobody was ever going to get to”

Dependency bumps, flaky test fixes, small migrations — two years of accumulated chores. I fed Devin about sixty tightly written tickets over a month and merged most of what came back. It has never once solved a hard problem for me, and I no longer expect it to.

“Much more reasonable at $20 than at $500”

We looked at it when it was $500 a month and could not justify it. At $20 plus usage we trialled it properly and found the shape of work it is good at. That is a much better way to sell this, because you need a month to learn what to give it.

“Do not believe the autonomy story”

It is a capable junior that needs very precise instructions and full review, not a software engineer. Used that way it is useful. Used the way the launch video implied, it will waste your money and your afternoon. Manage the expectation before you buy it for a team.
