Midjourney

The image model with the strongest aesthetic

  • Midjourney, Inc. · United States
  • Since 2022

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Best-looking default output of any image generator we tested

  2. Style and character references give real art direction control

  3. Text rendering inside images remains unreliable

  4. Generations are public by default below the $60 Pro tier

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 27, 2026

Midjourney still produces the best-looking images by default, and for creative work that matters more than instruction-following accuracy. Ask five image tools for the same scene and Midjourney's will be the one that looks composed rather than assembled — lighting, colour and framing that a designer would have chosen.

The control features are what moved it from a toy to a professional tool. Style references let you pin a consistent look across a campaign; character references keep the same person recognisable across different scenes. Together they answer the objection that generated imagery cannot be on-brand, and they are the reason our design reviewers use it for concept work and moodboards rather than only for experiments.

Two limitations persist. Text inside images is still unreliable — do not expect usable typography — and it follows complex, specific prompts less literally than competitors, which is precisely the trade-off that produces its better aesthetics. The web app has removed the old Discord-only friction, though the basic plan's public-by-default generations remain a real problem for commercially sensitive work; stealth mode requires the $60 Pro tier.

Our guidance: buy it for concept work, moodboards, editorial illustration and campaign imagery where look matters most. If you need accurate text in an image or literal adherence to a detailed brief, use a different generator.

Concept work in an hour instead of a week

Used weekly for 1–2 years

For early-stage visual direction it has changed how we work. I generate forty directions, take three to the client, and we have agreed a look before we would previously have finished the first moodboard. Style references keep everything coherent afterwards.

Had to upgrade to Pro for client work

Used weekly for 1–2 years

Nobody mentions that on the cheaper plans your generations are visible to other users. For unannounced client campaigns that is unacceptable, so stealth mode is effectively mandatory and the real price is $60 rather than $10.

Beautiful, occasionally uncontrollable

Used weekly for 6–12 months

When it understands what I want the result is better than I could have art-directed. When it does not, no amount of prompt rewriting fixes it and I switch tools. It is an aesthetic instrument, not a precision one.
