What is Surfshark?
Surfshark is a VPN service from Surfshark B.V., a company in Amsterdam founded in 2018. It says it's based in the Netherlands, which it describes as a country that doesn't require companies to store or report user data.
The apps connect over WireGuard, OpenVPN or IKEv2 to more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries. Every server is diskless and runs on RAM only, so it's wiped on each reboot. A kill switch cuts the internet connection if the VPN drops, Bypasser handles split tunneling, and Dynamic MultiHop sends traffic through a double VPN connection. Surfshark lists apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, among other platforms, and every plan allows unlimited simultaneous connections.
There are three plans. Starter is the VPN with an ad blocker, a cookie pop-up blocker, Rotating IP and Alternative ID, which generates masked email addresses. One adds antivirus, data-leak alerts and scam protection, and One+ adds Incogni data removal and identity theft coverage for eligible US residents. Each plan is sold month to month or on 12- and 24-month terms billed upfront at an introductory price. A 7-day free trial asks for a 12- or 24-month plan choice plus email and payment details, and a 30-day money-back guarantee applies, with refunds requested through live chat.

Surfshark fits a household with lots of devices to protect. All three plans, Starter included, allow unlimited simultaneous connections, where Proton VPN's VPN Plus stops at 10. Starter is also more than a bare VPN: it comes with an ad blocker, a cookie pop-up blocker, masked email addresses through Alternative ID, Bypasser split tunneling and Dynamic MultiHop. On the privacy side, the servers are diskless and RAM-only, and Deloitte gave assurance on Surfshark's no-logs statement in 2023 and again in 2025.
The weak spot is the bill after the first term. Surfshark sells its one- and two-year plans at introductory prices, and the pricing page says only that renewal is charged at "the applicable renewal price" without giving the amount, so the long-term cost can't be compared from what Surfshark publishes. The free trial has conditions too. It lasts 7 days, covers up to three devices and asks for payment details and a 12- or 24-month plan choice before it starts.
Starter is the plan most buyers need. It costs $16.45 a month on monthly billing, or $50.85 billed upfront for the one-year plan. With no published renewal price, the monthly rate is the safer figure to plan around, and it's worth asking Surfshark what the one-year plan renews at before you buy it. One costs $18.95 a month or $53.85 upfront for a year and adds antivirus, leak alerts and scam protection, which matter only if you don't already pay for those. One+ costs $21.85 a month or $112.35 upfront for a year. Its identity theft coverage is limited to US residents outside New York State, and Incogni data removal to residents of the US, UK, EU, Switzerland and Canada.
Choose Surfshark if the number of devices decides it for you. If a predictable bill matters more, Proton VPN states its renewal price, $83.88 a year for VPN Plus on 10 devices, and Mullvad charges a flat €5 a month with no renewal increase, though it covers 5 devices.
