Surfshark's unlimited device policy is the most practically useful feature in this comparison. Everyone else counts connections; Surfshark does not, so one subscription covers a household of five people with fifteen devices, or a small team, at a price below most single-user plans.
The product backs it up. Speeds were solid if not class-leading in our testing, it has been independently audited, CleanWeb blocks ads and trackers effectively, and the apps are cleaner than NordVPN's. Alternative ID and antivirus in higher tiers add genuine value rather than padding.
Two caveats. Its 2022 merger with Nord Security means two of the most-recommended VPNs share a parent, which reduces the independence buyers assume when comparing them — worth knowing rather than disqualifying. And like everyone here, the two-year price is introductory; the renewal is several times higher.
Our guidance: the best value in the category, and the obvious choice for a household or small team. Choose NordVPN for maximum speed, and Proton or Mullvad if the privacy question is serious rather than general.

“One subscription for the whole house”

Five people, about sixteen devices between us including two smart TVs. Every other provider wanted a second subscription. Surfshark simply does not count, which turned a per-device problem into a non-problem.

“Good enough, and much cheaper”

I compared it against NordVPN for a fortnight. Nord is faster on long routes; on anything I actually do — streaming, calls, café Wi-Fi — I could not tell them apart, and Surfshark cost half as much.

We shortlisted Surfshark and NordVPN as independent options and then discovered they share a parent. That is not disqualifying but it does undermine the point of comparing them, and it is not prominently disclosed.
