Key takeaways
from our research
The most capable automation builder available at small-business prices
Built-in CRM and lead scoring make it a genuine marketing-to-sales handoff tool
Contact-based pricing from ~$15/mo at 1,000 contacts; useful features sit in higher tiers
Steepest learning curve in the category — budget real onboarding time
Our verdict
ActiveCampaign is the best automation engine a small business can buy, and the right default for anyone whose email marketing ends in a sales conversation rather than a checkout.
The automation canvas is the product. Conditional branches, wait steps, goal jumps, split tests inside a flow, and actions that write to a CRM deal record — you can express a genuinely complicated nurture process without leaving the builder, and without the enterprise price tag that usually accompanies that capability. Lead scoring is built in and actually usable, which matters when email’s job is to hand a warm contact to a human.
The trade-offs are consistent across our reviews. The learning curve is the steepest in this category; a marketer coming from Mailchimp will feel it for a fortnight. The interface carries some age, and the template editor is functional rather than delightful. Pricing is contact-based and, like Mailchimp, rises with list size — the Starter plan begins around $15 per month at 1,000 contacts, but the tiers that unlock the interesting automation and CRM features cost more, and the plan structure has been reshuffled often enough to make comparison shopping annoying.
Our guidance: choose ActiveCampaign when your funnel has stages and your emails need to react to behavior. Choose Klaviyo instead if you sell products and need catalog flows, Mailchimp if simplicity outranks capability, and Brevo if cost per send is the binding constraint.

Pros & cons
Where ActiveCampaign shines — and where it doesn't
What users love
- Conditional branching and goal logic rival tools costing several times more
- Lead scoring and CRM included rather than sold separately
- Strong integration library and reliable deliverability
- Automation templates shorten the initial build considerably
Where it falls short
- Genuinely steep learning curve for marketers new to automation
- Interface and email builder feel dated next to newer rivals
- Frequent plan restructuring makes price comparison harder than it should be

“The automation builder is the reason to buy it”
Used daily for 1–2 years
Conditional branches, goal jumps and scoring that writes back to deal records — we built a nurture sequence that would have needed a marketing automation platform costing five times as much. It took two weeks to learn properly and has paid off since.

“Our default for B2B clients”
Used daily for 2+ years
For anyone whose email leads to a sales conversation rather than a checkout, this is what we install. The CRM and scoring mean marketing and sales share one view without buying a second system.

“Powerful but not for a one-person marketing team”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
I spent a fortnight getting comfortable and I do this professionally. A generalist wearing four hats would struggle. Once configured it runs quietly, which is the payoff.
