CapCut

Where short-form video actually gets made

  • ByteDance Ltd. · Singapore

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Fastest path to a captioned vertical edit by a wide margin

  2. Free tier covers most short-form work; Pro is around $8/mo

  3. Projects move between phone and desktop, matching how social content is made

  4. ByteDance ownership is a genuine procurement blocker in some organisations

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Aug 5, 2026

CapCut wins the format it was built for, and that format is most of the video being made today. Vertical presets, trending templates, one-tap auto captions with styling, background removal and beat-matched effects — in our 45-second social test it produced a finished, captioned vertical edit faster than any professional NLE, by a wide margin.

The free tier covers the overwhelming majority of that work, which explains its ubiquity. Pro at around $8 a month adds cloud storage, higher exports and more effects, and remains far cheaper than anything else here. The mobile and desktop apps share projects, so an edit started on a phone finishes on a laptop — a workflow that suits how social content actually gets produced.

Two real caveats. It is a social editor, not a professional one: no proper colour management, weak long-form handling, and template-driven output that can look identical to everyone else's. And its ByteDance ownership has led some organisations — particularly government-adjacent and regulated ones — to prohibit it. That is a procurement question worth asking before standardising on it.

Our guidance: the right tool for short-form social, and there is no serious argument otherwise. Pair it with a real editor for anything long-form; plenty of professionals do exactly that.

Nothing else is close for vertical

Used daily for 1–2 years

I tried cutting Reels in Premiere for a month out of professional pride. CapCut does the same job in a fifth of the time with better captions, and my audience cannot tell which tool made what.

Our security team said no

Used weekly for 6–12 months

The tool is genuinely good and our social team loved it. ByteDance ownership meant it failed our vendor review, so we use something worse. Worth checking your policy before you build a workflow on it.

Phone to desktop handoff is the underrated bit

Used daily for 6–12 months

Our social lead shoots and roughs a clip on her phone on location, and finishes it on a laptop later in the same project. No exporting, no transferring. That matches how the work actually happens.
