Hollywood-grade post-production, free

Key takeaways
from our research
The free version is genuinely professional, not a watermarked trial
Colour grading is the industry standard for feature film work
Studio upgrade is a $295 one-off, not a subscription
Steep learning curve and a real GPU requirement
Our verdict
Resolve is free, and that sentence undersells it — this is the colour grading tool used on feature films, with a complete editor, audio suite and VFX package attached. Blackmagic gives it away to sell cameras, which means an independent creator gets professional post-production capability at no cost, with no watermark and no time limit.
The free version is not a demo. It exports 4K, has the full colour page, Fairlight audio and Fusion compositing. The $295 one-off Studio upgrade adds noise reduction, some AI tools and better hardware acceleration, and it remains the cheapest professional software purchase in this directory by a distance.
The costs are difficulty and hardware. Resolve has five separate workspaces with distinct interfaces and genuinely takes months to learn properly — our reviewers who came from consumer editors describe it as the hardest transition here. It also demands a competent GPU; on modest hardware the experience is poor in a way Premiere's is not.
Our guidance: the obvious choice for solo creators and anyone whose work involves colour. Choose Premiere when a team and freelance ecosystem matter more than capability, and Final Cut if you are on Apple silicon and want speed above all.

“Cancelled Creative Cloud and did not look back”
Used daily for 1–2 years
We were paying about £700 a year per editor. Resolve does everything we were using Premiere for, grades better, and cost us £295 once for Studio. Two months of retraining, then it was simply better and free.

“Free version is genuinely enough”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
I make YouTube videos and have never hit a limit in the free version. 4K export, no watermark, multicam, decent audio. It is difficult to believe this is given away until you have used it for a year.

“Powerful, and I went back to Premiere”
Used weekly for 6–12 months
Resolve is objectively more capable. But every freelancer we hire knows Premiere, our After Effects round-trip is seamless, and handing a project to a colleague takes no explanation. Capability was not the constraint.
