Adobe Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro fits editors whose work moves between people and between Adobe apps. Team Projects puts several editors on one timeline at the same time, the Frame.io panel brings review into the editor, and Dynamic Link passes material to After Effects without a render in between. Because it runs on macOS and Windows, a studio with both kinds of machine can standardize on one editor. The speech features earn their place in everyday work as well: the transcript made on import doubles as a way to cut interviews, and captions come from the same transcription in 18 languages.

The drawback is the contract. Adobe sells Premiere only by membership, and its plan pages show a single way to pay, a one-year commitment billed monthly. Cancel within 14 days and the order is refunded in full. After that, Adobe charges half of what remains on the year as a lump sum, or 30% of the annual commitment in California, so subscribing is in practice a decision about the whole year. Generative features are rationed too. The single-app plan includes 25 generative credits a month against 4,000 on Creative Cloud Pro, and Generative Extend draws on that allowance.

For a solo editor the Premiere single-app plan covers the editing work: $22.99 a month on the yearly commitment, or $275.88 across the year. Creative Cloud Pro, at $69.99 a month on the same terms, is worth it for someone who also uses Adobe's photo and design apps or needs the larger credit allowance. Premiere for teams costs $37.99 per license a month and adds 1TB of storage, an admin console and 180-day version histories. Adobe suggests teams plans for 1 to 10 licenses and sends larger groups to sales. The free trial runs seven days from checkout.

Choose Premiere for team editing across Mac and Windows, or when After Effects is part of the job, and accept that the bill continues for as long as you use it. A solo editor who'd rather pay once should look at DaVinci Resolve, whose free version already covers editing, color, effects and audio, with Studio at $295 one time. On a Mac, Final Cut Pro costs $299.99 once, about 13 months of the Premiere single-app plan.
