Key takeaways
from our research
Editing the transcript edits the video — halves edit time on spoken content
Studio Sound and filler-word removal are genuinely reliable, not demos
Wrong tool for anything visually driven or graphics-heavy
Cloud-dependent, with real upload time on long recordings
Our verdict
Descript is the fastest way to cut talking-head video ever made, and it is not close. The transcript is the timeline: delete a paragraph and the video goes with it, remove every "um" with one click, and search for a phrase rather than scrubbing. For podcasts, interviews, webinars and course content, our reviewers consistently report cutting editing time by half or more.
The AI tools around it are unusually practical. Studio Sound makes a poor room recording sound like a treated one, filler-word removal is genuinely reliable, eye contact correction fixes the reading-from-a-script problem, and Overdub can patch a misspoken word from text. These are not demos; they solve the actual annoyances of this content type.
The limits are firm and worth respecting. Anything visually driven — multicam narrative, colour grading, motion graphics, action footage — belongs in a real NLE, and Descript will frustrate you. It is also cloud-dependent, so upload time on long recordings is real, and reviewers report occasional performance problems on very long projects.
Our guidance: buy it if you produce spoken-word video regularly; the time saving is the largest single productivity gain in this category. Keep a real editor alongside for everything else — many of our reviewers do exactly that.

“Halved the time on every podcast episode”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
A 50-minute interview used to take me three hours to cut. Now I read the transcript, delete what does not work, click to remove filler words and export. It is about seventy minutes end to end.

“Our marketing team edits their own videos now”
Used weekly for 6–12 months
Nobody here can use Premiere. Everybody can delete a sentence from a document. Webinar clips and customer interviews now get cut by the person who ran them rather than queuing for our one video person.

“Bought it expecting an NLE replacement”
Used monthly for 6–12 months
It is not one and does not claim to be, but the marketing let me assume. For our client work — narrative, graded, graphics-heavy — it was useless. We kept it for interview transcription and use Resolve for editing.
