Overview
What is Replit?
Replit is a platform for building and publishing software with an AI agent, made by Replit, Inc., a US company founded in 2016. You describe what you want in a chat, and Replit Agent sets up the project, writes the code, checks its work and fixes problems as it goes. It builds web apps, mobile apps, data dashboards and AI tools, and its documentation says Agent can work in any framework or language, including Python, Go, Rust and C#.
On paid plans, Plan mode lets Agent break a project into ordered tasks without touching the code; Build mode is where it writes and changes files. Each Build mode request ends in a checkpoint, a snapshot of the files, the conversation and the database, and any checkpoint can be restored with one click. In its paid Power and Max modes, Agent can also test an app in a real browser and fix what fails. Mobile apps are built with Expo and React Native.
Every app comes with a managed PostgreSQL database, file storage and Replit Auth for sign-in, and can be published as an autoscaling, always-on, scheduled or static deployment. Projects sync both ways with GitHub or download as a zip file. Replit runs in the browser, in desktop apps for macOS and Windows, and in mobile apps for iOS and Android. Plans include monthly credits, counted in dollars, for Agent work, hosting, storage and data transfer; Agent requests are priced by effort, and usage beyond the credits is billed as you go.

Replit's strength is that the whole path from idea to running app happens in one place. Every project has a database, file storage and sign-in built in, and publishing sits in the same workspace, so a working app does not depend on outside services. It is also not tied to one stack: Agent works with any framework or language, which matters when a project needs a Python backend or a command-line tool rather than a JavaScript web app. Checkpoints that can restore files, conversation and database make a bad change easy to undo, and two-way GitHub sync keeps the code portable.
The weakness is that the cost of a change is hard to know in advance. Agent work is priced by effort, so a small fix costs little and a complex build costs more, and the same monthly credits also pay for hosting, storage and data transfer. Once they run out, usage is billed as you go, so budget caps and usage alerts are worth setting on the first day. The free Starter plan is for trying the product rather than running anything: its one published app goes offline after 30 days. On Android, Replit can build and preview an app but cannot yet publish it to Google Play.
Most buyers will start on Core: $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, with $20 of monthly credits, Plan mode and up to 5 builders. Pro costs $100 a month, or $90 a month billed yearly, and pools $100 of credits for up to 15 builders and 50 viewers with no per-user fees; unused credits roll over for two months. Pro replaced the Teams plan, so a sixth builder means a fivefold jump in the base price.
Choose Replit for internal tools, prototypes and small products that need a real backend, particularly one in Python or another language besides JavaScript. For JavaScript web apps on a fixed budget, Bolt.new is simpler to plan for: its Pro plan is a set 10M tokens for $25 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly. A team of more than five on a similar budget can look at Lovable, whose $25-a-month Pro plan allows unlimited workspace members.

Is Replit free?
Yes, with tight limits. The free Starter plan gives you daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap and limited monthly cloud credits, but no collaborators, no Plan mode and only one published app, which goes offline after 30 days and carries a Made with Replit badge. How does Replit's effort-based pricing work?
Each request you give Agent in Build mode is billed as a single checkpoint priced by the effort it took, so a small bug fix costs less than building a whole feature. Core and Pro include a Free Mode for everyday work within an allowance, and Replit asks for confirmation before paid work in its Power or Max modes begins. Charges come out of your plan's monthly credits, which also pay for publishing, databases and storage, and anything beyond them is billed as you go. Budget caps and usage alerts are set in your billing settings.
How many people can use one Replit plan?
Up to 5 builders on Core and up to 15 on Pro. Core costs $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly. Pro costs $100 a month, or $90 a month billed yearly, adds up to 50 viewers and pools its $100 of monthly credits across the whole team with no per-user fees; unused credits roll over for two months. Replit retired its Teams plan in 2026 and moved Teams subscribers to Pro. Custom seat limits and SSO need the quote-based Enterprise plan.
Can Replit build iPhone and Android apps?
Yes. Agent builds native mobile apps with Expo and React Native, which compiles to native code rather than a web view. On Core, Pro and Enterprise you can preview them in an iOS Simulator or Android Emulator streamed into the browser, or test on your own phone with the Expo Go app. Replit can send iPhone builds to TestFlight and the App Store, which requires an Apple Developer Program membership, but publishing to Google Play is not yet supported.
Do you own the code Replit Agent writes?
Yes. Replit's documentation says you own the code Agent generates and are responsible for it, including checking its correctness, security and licensing, along with any third-party packages it adds. Its terms also warn that AI-generated code may be erroneous or incomplete. You can download a project as a zip file from the file tree, or connect a GitHub repository and turn on auto-sync in the Git pane to keep both copies in step.
