Zoho Books

Accounting that connects to the rest of your business

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Inventory, client portal and project billing appear at lower tiers than rivals

  2. Free plan exists but is capped by annual revenue and user count

  3. Native integration with Zoho CRM and Zoho One is the strongest reason to choose it

  4. Fewer US accountants are fluent in it than QuickBooks or Xero

Our verdict

Updated Aug 12, 2026Fact-checked Jun 18, 2026

Zoho Books gives you more accounting software per dollar than anything else in this category — and its best argument is what surrounds it.

Feature-for-price, the comparison is lopsided. Inventory tracking, project time-billing, a client portal, multi-currency, workflow automation and recurring transactions all appear at tiers where QuickBooks and Xero are still charging extra or withholding entirely. There is a free plan for businesses under a revenue threshold, and paid tiers start well below the competition. For a small business that already runs Zoho CRM or the wider Zoho One suite, the native links between quotes, deals, invoices and books remove a whole class of double entry.

The reasons it is not our default are practical rather than technical. In the US, far fewer accountants work in Zoho Books than in QuickBooks, which means more explaining at year end and a smaller pool of bookkeepers who can step in. The interface is dense — that is the Zoho house style — and the free plan’s revenue ceiling and user caps arrive sooner than the feature list suggests. Third-party integrations outside the Zoho ecosystem are thinner than either market leader.

Our guidance: if you are already a Zoho shop, Zoho Books is close to an automatic choice. If you are not, weigh the money you save against the friction of handing your accountant an unfamiliar system — a trade that usually favours Xero or QuickBooks in the US and is much closer elsewhere.

Obvious choice because we already ran Zoho CRM

Used weekly for 1–2 years

Quotes become invoices without re-entry and the customer record is shared. If you are already in the Zoho ecosystem the integration argument beats any feature comparison.

Most features per dollar, if you can learn it

Used weekly for 1–2 years

Inventory, project billing, multi-currency and workflow rules for less than QuickBooks Essentials. The trade is that everything takes a few more clicks and the UI is busy.

Good software, US accountant friction is real

Used weekly for 6–12 months

Works well. The recurring cost is explaining it — two of the three bookkeepers we interviewed had never touched Zoho Books, and the one who had charged a premium.
