Prompt, run, edit and deploy full-stack apps in the browser

  • StackBlitz, Inc. · United States
  • Since 2024

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. A real Node runtime in the browser, so the app genuinely runs rather than previewing

  2. You can edit the generated code directly when the AI gets stuck

  3. One-click deploy to a public URL with hosting included

  4. Token consumption is the real cost and it moves faster than the sticker price suggests

Our verdict

Updated Aug 29, 2026Fact-checked Aug 21, 2026

Bolt.new is the fastest route from an idea to something running on a URL, and it is genuinely impressive the first time you use it. Describe an app, watch it scaffold the whole thing, see it running in a tab within a minute, deploy it to a public address in one click. For validating a concept, building an internal tool over a lunch break, or putting a working demo in front of someone instead of a mockup, nothing in this category is quicker.

What separates it from the other prompt-to-app builders is the runtime. StackBlitz spent years building WebContainers — Node running inside the browser — so npm installs, dev servers and builds all happen locally in your tab. That means no waiting on a remote sandbox, and it means you can drop into the code and edit it directly at any point. You are not locked out of your own project when the AI gets stuck, which is the failure mode that ends most no-code experiments.

The limits arrive predictably. Token consumption is the real currency here and it goes faster than anyone expects — a stubborn bug can cost a substantial slice of a monthly allowance because every retry re-sends context, and the free tier's 1M tokens is enough to build something small once, not to iterate on it. Output quality also drops off as an app grows past a few dozen files; reviewers consistently describe a ceiling somewhere around "working prototype" rather than "production system", and the code it writes tends to need a developer's pass before it carries real users.

Our guidance: excellent for prototypes, demos, internal tools and validating an idea before committing engineering time. Plan to hand the result to a developer if it succeeds, and watch the token meter from day one.

Replaced our design mockups entirely

Used weekly for 6–12 months

We used to take wireframes into stakeholder meetings and argue about them. Now I build the actual thing in an afternoon and let people click it. Decisions that took three meetings take one. It has changed how we scope work more than how we build it.

Built my MVP, then had to rebuild it

Used weekly for 6–12 months

It got me to a working product with paying users in three weeks, which I could not have done otherwise. At about forty files it started struggling — fixes broke other things and I burned tokens going in circles. I brought in a contractor to rewrite it properly. Worth every penny for what it proved.

We use it for internal tools and nothing else

Used monthly for 6–12 months

Admin dashboards, one-off data viewers, small internal forms — things that would sit in the backlog forever. Bolt does them in an afternoon and nobody minds that the code is average because twelve people use it behind our VPN. I would not point it at anything customer-facing.
