What is Bolt.new?
Bolt.new is an AI builder for websites, web apps and mobile apps from StackBlitz, a US company founded in 2017. It runs on WebContainers, StackBlitz's technology for running a Node.js development environment inside a browser tab, so there is nothing to install. You describe the project in the chat, Bolt writes the code and shows the result in a preview, and further messages add features, change the design or fix bugs.
The chat has two modes. Plan mode discusses the project and drafts an approach without changing any code, and Build mode makes the changes. Paid plans can switch from the default Standard agent to Max, which thinks more about each step and is meant for large or complex projects. Files can also be edited by hand in the Code view, which uses no tokens. Backends must be JavaScript-based, so Python and PHP are not supported. Mobile apps are built with Expo and tested on a phone through the Expo Go app.
Bolt Cloud covers hosting on a bolt.host address, databases, user sign-in, file storage and server functions, and paid plans can add a custom domain. Pro and Teams users can choose Supabase for the database instead. Projects sync both ways with GitHub, and there are integrations for Figma, Stripe and Netlify. Usage is measured in tokens, most of which go on Bolt reading and syncing the project's files, so a larger project costs more per message. Paid plans are sold in monthly token tiers, and Teams is billed per member.

Bolt suits people who want a working app quickly and can read code when the chat gets stuck. Anything it writes can be changed by hand in the Code view without spending tokens, so a wrong answer need not be fought with more prompts. The scope is wide: websites, full-stack web apps and Expo mobile apps, with hosting, a database, sign-in and Stripe payments in the same project. Two-way GitHub sync, and code that is yours for any legal purpose, mean a project can leave Bolt when it needs to.
The main weakness is cost control. Most tokens go on reading and syncing the project's files, so each message costs more as the app grows, and every click of Attempt fix spends tokens whether or not the fix works. The backend must be JavaScript, which rules out Python or PHP, and publishing a mobile app to the App Store or Google Play means setting up Node.js and Git on a computer. Client work also needs a settings check: from October 7, 2026, Bolt can use projects and chats to train AI models unless the setting is switched off, and the setting is on by default outside the EU, UK and Switzerland.
Most buyers will need Pro: $25 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, for 10M tokens, with no daily cap, no Bolt branding, custom domains and unused tokens that roll over for up to two months. Heavier use means a larger tier, such as 26M tokens for $50 a month ($45 billed yearly). Teams costs $30 per member a month, or $27 billed yearly, with 10M tokens each that are not pooled across the team. The free plan's 300K tokens a day, up to 1M a month, is enough to judge whether Bolt fits a project.
Choose Bolt for prototypes, internal tools and early products when someone involved can read JavaScript, or as a fast scaffold for a developer to continue in GitHub. A team that wants one shared allowance should look at Lovable, whose Pro plan is priced per workspace with credits shared by all members. A project that needs a Python backend or another language belongs on Replit, whose Agent works with any framework or language.

Is Bolt.new free?
Yes. The free plan gives you 300K tokens a day, up to 1M a month, along with public and private projects, hosting on a bolt.host address and 10MB file uploads. Free tokens do not roll over, published sites carry Bolt branding, and custom domains need a paid plan. Pro starts at $25 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, for 10M tokens with no daily cap. How do tokens work in Bolt.new?
Tokens measure the work Bolt's AI does when it reads, plans and builds your project. Most of them go on reading and syncing your project's files, so the same request costs more in a large project than in a small one, and every click of Attempt fix uses tokens. Editing code yourself in the Code view costs nothing. Paid allowances reset on your renewal date, unused tokens stay valid for two months from the start of the billing cycle in which they arrived, and the oldest are spent first.
Does Bolt.new use my projects to train AI models?
It can, unless you turn the setting off. A Model training setting, added in September 2026, controls whether Bolt may use your projects and chats to train AI models. It is on by default except for accounts in the EU, UK and Switzerland, and it applies from October 7, 2026. StackBlitz's privacy policy also allows de-identified datasets built from that content to be licensed to third parties. Opting out is free on every plan. The optional Forge agent is separate: using it means agreeing to share de-identified project data for training open-source models.
Do I own the code Bolt.new generates?
Yes. Bolt's help center says all code you create with Bolt and StackBlitz is your own and can be used for any legal purpose, including commercial work. Connecting a GitHub repository keeps a copy outside Bolt: Bolt commits each change that does not break the project and pulls in edits made on GitHub every 30 seconds. What can Bolt.new build?
Websites, web apps and mobile apps, as long as the code is JavaScript-based. Bolt supports JavaScript frontend frameworks and Node.js backends, but not backends written in Python or PHP. Mobile apps are built with Expo: you test them on your phone by scanning a QR code with the Expo Go app, and publishing to the App Store or Google Play requires a computer with Node.js and Git, an Expo account and an Apple or Google developer account.
