Public, indexable discussion means every answered question becomes a support asset and a search-traffic source — for software companies and open-source projects, this turns a community into an acquisition channel rather than a cost centre.
Technically it is the most serious product here. Trust levels that grant privileges as members earn them, moderation queues that scale to tens of thousands of users, plugin extensibility, and genuinely excellent search. Self-hosting means you own the database outright — the only platform in this category that makes migration a real option rather than a theoretical one.
It is also the least suited to paid membership. Payment support exists via plugins rather than natively, the interface is forum-shaped rather than modern-social, and reviewers targeting a creator or coaching audience consistently report that it feels dated to their members. Self-hosting is genuine operational work, and the hosted plans start at $100 a month.
