Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Highest week-eight retention of the private platforms in our 60-day pilot

  2. Courses, events and live streams are native — no extra subscriptions

  3. 4% platform fee on lower tiers; the tier that removes it usually pays for itself

  4. More expensive than Skool and easy to over-buy for a simple community

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 19, 2026

Circle wins because it is good for members and good for owners at the same time, which is rarer than it sounds. Members get a clean, fast interface with spaces, threads, DMs, events and live streams that does not feel like a repurposed forum. Owners get member management, paywalls, analytics and moderation that actually work at a few thousand people.

In our 60-day pilot it produced the highest week-eight retention of the private platforms, and the reason appeared to be notification quality — email digests and mobile push that bring people back without irritating them. Courses and events being native means a paid membership can bundle discussion, learning and live sessions without three subscriptions.

The costs are fees and price. Lower tiers take 4% of member payments, which at $5,000 monthly revenue is $200 on top of the plan — the Professional tier that removes it usually pays for itself quickly. Circle is also more expensive than Skool at every level, and reviewers running simple communities frequently conclude they are paying for capability they do not use.

Our guidance: the default for a paid community with real ambitions. Choose Skool if simplicity and flat pricing matter more, and Discourse if the community should be public and searchable.

Members actually come back, which is the whole game

Used daily for 1–2 years

We ran a community on a cheaper tool for a year and it died quietly. Same members, same content, moved to Circle, and participation tripled. The difference is that people get pulled back by digests and push rather than having to remember.

Paid community bundled with our course

Used daily for 1–2 years

Selling a course plus community as one product works properly here — members get lessons and discussion in the same place and the paywall handles both. Previously that was two logins and a lot of confusion.

Overpaid for a 120-person group

Used weekly for 6–12 months

Lovely product, but our community is one space and a weekly thread. We were paying $99 a month for features we never opened. Moved to Skool at $99 flat with courses included and nobody noticed a downgrade.
