Kit
The email-first operating system for creators
- Kit (formerly ConvertKit) · United States
- Since 2013
Key takeaways
from our research
Free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers — by far the most generous here
Tag-based subscribers instead of lists, so nobody is billed twice
Native paid newsletters and digital product sales via Kit Commerce
No SMS, no meaningful A/B testing, no CRM — deliberately narrow
Our verdict
Kit is the best tool in this category for a specific person: someone whose business is an audience. Newsletter writers, course creators, coaches, authors, independent educators. For that person Kit is excellent, and for almost everyone else it is the wrong shape.
The design decisions all follow from the audience. There are no lists — every subscriber is one record with tags, which eliminates the duplicate-contact billing problem that plagues list-based platforms. Emails default to plain text because that is what performs for creators. Landing pages and forms are included on every plan, including the free one, which covers up to 10,000 subscribers — the most generous free tier in the category by a wide margin. Kit Commerce lets you sell a digital product or a paid newsletter without adding Stripe plumbing or a separate membership tool.
The gaps are equally deliberate. There is no A/B testing worth the name, no SMS, no CRM, and no ecommerce revenue attribution. The visual automation builder is clean but simpler than ActiveCampaign’s. If your business sells physical products, or your marketing feeds a sales team, none of Kit’s advantages apply and its omissions become disqualifying.
Our guidance: if you are monetizing an audience with words, start on Kit’s free plan and stay. If you are running a company’s marketing, look at ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo or Brevo instead.

“Free to 10,000 subscribers is not a typo”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
I grew a newsletter to 6,000 subscribers and sold a digital product without paying anything. When I did upgrade it was because I wanted the automation, not because I hit a wall. That is an unusually honest free tier.

“Tags instead of lists is the right model”
Used weekly for 6–12 months
Every list-based platform billed me twice for people who subscribed to two things. Kit has one subscriber record with tags and the problem disappears. Small design decision, large practical difference.

“Wrong tool for my consulting business”
Used monthly for less than 6 months
Bought it on a recommendation without noticing it is built for creators. No real CRM, no sales-shaped features, no SMS. Great software, I just was not who it was for.
