Screaming Frog
The technical crawler nobody replaces

Key takeaways
from our research
One flat £199/year licence — no seats, credits or crawl-tier pricing
Crawl limits are your hardware, not a plan, and it reaches staging environments
Custom extraction, JS rendering and log analysis exceed any cloud auditor
No keyword, link or rank data — buy it alongside a research tool, not instead
Our verdict
Screaming Frog is the least glamorous and most indispensable tool in this category. For £199 a year — one licence, no seats, no credits — it crawls a site as a search engine would and tells you what is broken, with a depth of configuration no cloud auditor matches. Custom extraction with XPath, JavaScript rendering, log file analysis and direct integration with Search Console and Analytics make it the tool technical SEOs open first.
Because it runs on your machine, crawl limits are your hardware rather than a plan tier, and you can point it at staging environments behind authentication that cloud crawlers cannot reach. In our 40,000-URL comparison it surfaced everything the cloud tools found plus a set of redirect and canonical problems they did not, and it did so faster.
It is not a research tool and does not pretend to be. There is no keyword database, no link index, no rank tracking. The interface is dense and spreadsheet-like, and the free version's 500-URL cap makes it a demo rather than a working tool. New users find it intimidating; experienced ones find everything else limiting.
Our guidance: buy it alongside Ahrefs or Semrush rather than instead of one. At under £17 a month it is the cheapest line in most SEO budgets and frequently the most used.

“Cheapest line in our budget, most used tool”
Used weekly for 2+ years
Two hundred pounds a year against two hundred a month for the cloud tools, and I open it more often than either. Custom extraction alone — pulling schema and prices off 30,000 product pages — has paid for a decade of licences.

“Developers argue with cloud audits and not with this”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
When I bring a Screaming Frog export with the exact URLs, status codes and redirect chains, the conversation is about fixing it. Vague cloud-tool severity scores produce debates instead.

“Not a research tool, and that is fine”
Used weekly for 2+ years
People sometimes evaluate it against Ahrefs and conclude it is missing everything. It is missing everything on purpose. Buy both — together they cost less than most single enterprise SEO seats.
