One platform for organic, paid, content and PR

Key takeaways
from our research
Only major tool with serious paid search and PR data alongside SEO
Most thorough cloud site audit in our 40,000-URL comparison
Additional seats cost close to another subscription — price your team, not one login
Interface complexity is the most common complaint from new users
Our verdict
Semrush is the right purchase when SEO is one of several channels you are responsible for. Its coverage of paid search — competitor ad copy, spend estimates, keyword gaps between organic and paid — has no equivalent in Ahrefs, and for a marketing team running both, having it in one place genuinely replaces subscriptions.
The toolkit is enormous: 55+ tools spanning keyword research, site audit, content optimisation, local listings, social scheduling and PR outreach. Its site audit was the most thorough cloud crawler in our 40,000-URL test, flagging issues Ahrefs missed, and the Position Tracking product is the most configurable here. For agencies, white-label reporting is built in rather than bolted on.
The costs are complexity and seats. New users routinely describe the interface as overwhelming, and the overlap between similar-sounding reports makes it hard to know which number to trust. Seat pricing is the sharper problem — additional users cost close to another subscription, which makes a small team's bill escalate fast. Keyword volume estimates also tracked our verified data slightly less closely than Ahrefs.
Our guidance: buy Semrush if you own paid and organic together or need one tool across several channels. Buy Ahrefs if your work is organic search and you want the better link data and a calmer interface.

“Replaced three subscriptions for our team”
Used daily for 2+ years
We were paying for an SEO tool, an ad intelligence tool and a social scheduler. Semrush Guru covers all three adequately. None is best-in-class, but one login and one invoice is worth more to us than a marginal data edge.

“Seat pricing pushed us to Ahrefs”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
Loved the toolkit. Then we needed four logins and the quote was more than our entire software budget. Moved organic work to Ahrefs and kept one Semrush seat purely for ad research.

“Best site audit, second-best link data”
Used daily for 1–2 years
Their crawler found things ours and Ahrefs both missed on a large ecommerce site — orphaned pages and a redirect chain nobody had noticed. For technical work it is excellent. For link research I still open Ahrefs.
