Approachable SEO with a genuine community

  • Moz (Ziff Davis) · United States
  • Since 2004

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Clearest explanations in the category — genuinely good for learning

  2. $99/mo undercuts both leaders while covering the fundamentals

  3. Link index and keyword data are visibly smaller than Ahrefs or Semrush

  4. Domain Authority is Moz's model, not a Google metric — do not optimise for it

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 22, 2026

Moz is the tool for people learning SEO and for budgets that will not stretch to the leaders. Its explanations are the best in the category — every metric comes with context about what it means and what to do, which is why a generation of practitioners learned here. For an in-house marketer who does SEO among five other responsibilities, that clarity is worth more than index size.

At $99 a month Standard it undercuts Ahrefs Lite and Semrush Pro meaningfully, and the toolkit covers the fundamentals properly: keyword research, link analysis, site crawls, rank tracking and local listing management. Its local SEO product is genuinely competitive rather than an afterthought, which matters for multi-location businesses.

The data gap is real and worth stating plainly. Moz's link index is smaller and slower to update than Ahrefs', and its keyword database is narrower than either leader's — in our accuracy check it diverged from verified Search Console data more often. Domain Authority is also widely misread: it is Moz's model of ranking potential, not a Google metric, and treating it as a target rather than a rough comparison is a common and expensive mistake.

Our guidance: a sensible choice for learners, small in-house teams and local businesses. If SEO is your profession and the data is your product, the leaders are worth the difference.

How I learned SEO

Used weekly for 1–2 years

Every metric comes with a plain explanation of what it means and what to do about it. As someone who came to SEO sideways, that teaching is worth more than a bigger index I would not have known how to use.

Outgrew it within a year

Used monthly for 1–2 years

Fine while our sites were small. On a competitive client the missing backlinks became a problem — we were reporting a link profile that did not match reality. Moved to Ahrefs and never looked back.

Right size for a multi-location business

Used weekly for 1–2 years

We have eleven locations and local pack visibility is most of our SEO. Moz Local plus Pro covers it for less than half what the big two quoted, and nobody here needs a link index.
