Basecamp is the antidote to project management maximalism — and for small client-services teams, that is exactly the point. Every project gets the same six tools: to-dos, a message board, a schedule, docs and files, group chat and a card table for lightweight kanban. There is nothing to configure, which means nothing to misconfigure, and new hires or clients understand it in ten minutes. Message boards replacing status-meeting culture remains its most underrated feature.
The pricing is a strategy in itself: $15/user/month with free clients and guests, or Pro Unlimited at a flat $299/month for unlimited users. Past roughly 25 people the flat plan makes Basecamp the cheapest serious option in the category — a 60-person studio pays less than an Asana Starter team half its size.
You must accept the philosophy. There are no Gantt charts, no sprints, no time tracking, no workload views and no dashboards; Hill Charts are a charming but partial substitute for progress reporting. Complex programs with interlocking dependencies will outgrow it, and data-driven PMOs will find nothing to measure. But for agencies, studios and small teams that want clients in the loop and calm instead of configuration, Basecamp — 2026's Easiest to Use badge holder — remains quietly excellent.

Basecamp is the only tool where my notification count went down. Hill charts are an underrated status metaphor — "up the hill figuring it out, down the hill executing" communicates more than any percent-complete bar. It refuses to do many things; that refusal is the feature.

Office moves, marketing pushes, vendor coordination — Basecamp keeps each in its own tidy room with to-dos, files and a schedule. Everyone from admin staff to leadership got it immediately. The $299 flat price for unlimited users made per-seat competitors look silly for our headcount.
