ChatGPT

The assistant that made the category

  • OpenAI · United States
  • Since 2022
  • 11 languages

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. The widest capability range of any assistant: search, files, images, voice, code and agents in one subscription

  2. Free tier is genuinely usable, so you can validate the category before paying

  3. Plus at $20/mo suits almost everyone; Pro at $200/mo is for heavy daily reasoning workloads only

  4. Model naming is the most-criticised part of the experience in our review data

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 13, 2026

ChatGPT is the assistant to buy if you are only buying one, and that is a genuinely strong position rather than a hedge. Across our eight test tasks it was the only product that never produced a result we would call unusable, and the range is the reason: research, drafting, spreadsheet work, image generation, code and voice all sit behind the same $20 subscription.

The free tier is now good enough for casual use, which changes the buying decision — you can establish whether the category helps you before spending anything. Plus at $20 a month is the tier almost everyone should be on, and the jump to Pro at $200 only makes sense for people running heavy reasoning workloads daily. Business at $25–30 per seat adds admin controls and keeps your data out of training by default, which is the version most companies actually need.

Where it loses is the specialist comparison. Perplexity cites sources more reliably for research. Claude holds long documents together better and writes with less of a house style. Gemini and Copilot beat it outright inside their own ecosystems. And OpenAI's model naming remains genuinely confusing — reviewers regularly report using the wrong model for a task because the picker gave them no useful guidance.

Our guidance: start free, upgrade to Plus, and only look elsewhere when you can name the specific thing ChatGPT is doing badly for you.

The one subscription I would keep

Used daily for 1–2 years

I trialled four assistants side by side for a month on real work — campaign briefs, spreadsheet analysis, competitor research. ChatGPT was never the best at any single one, and it was never bad at any of them either. For someone who cannot predict what next week needs, that consistency wins.

The one we standardised on across sales

Used daily for 1–2 years

We trialled three assistants with the sales team for a month. ChatGPT was the only one nobody complained about — it drafted follow-ups, cleaned up call notes and analysed a pipeline export without anyone needing training. Adoption was near total by week three, which is not something I can say about most software we roll out.

Business tier was the only version legal approved

Used daily for 6–12 months

Individuals on our team were already pasting customer data into personal accounts, which was the actual risk. Moving to Business gave us admin visibility, SSO and a training opt-out we could point at in a policy document. The product is the same; the governance is what we paid for.

Excellent, but verify anything that matters

Used daily for 2+ years

It is a genuinely strong engineering aid — rubber-ducking architecture, writing throwaway scripts, explaining unfamiliar code. It also states wrong things with total confidence, and the failure mode is subtle enough that a junior will not catch it. Useful multiplier, dangerous oracle.
