Perplexity
The answer engine with citations

Key takeaways
from our research
Most accurate inline citations of the five assistants we tested
Searches the live web by default rather than relying on training data
Deliberately narrow — weak at long creative writing and code generation
Works best as a second subscription alongside a general assistant
Our verdict
Perplexity is the one to use when you need to check the answer, not just read it. Every claim carries a link, the search is live rather than remembered, and in our testing its citations were the most consistently accurate of the five — the others cite too, but hallucinate or misattribute sources noticeably more often.
That focus makes it excellent for a specific job: market research, competitive checks, factual questions where being wrong is expensive, and any situation where you have to show a colleague where the number came from. Its Deep Research mode produces genuinely useful sourced reports, and the free tier is generous enough to establish whether the workflow suits you.
It is a poor general assistant, and it does not pretend otherwise. Long creative writing, code generation and extended multi-turn work are all weaker than the four products above. Reviewers who tried to make it their only tool were consistently the unhappiest in our data; those who use it alongside a general assistant are the happiest.
Our guidance: treat Perplexity as a second subscription, not a first. At $20 a month next to ChatGPT or Claude it is a sharp research instrument. As a sole assistant it will frustrate you within a fortnight.

“The citations are the entire product”
Used daily for 1–2 years
I write competitive briefs that a partner will challenge line by line. Being able to click through from a claim to the source page is not a nice extra, it is the difference between usable and not. Nothing else here comes close on that one axis.

“Second tool, never the first”
Used daily for 6–12 months
Tried to run on Perplexity alone for a month as an experiment. Research was better than anything else; everything else was worse. Now I pay for two subscriptions and use each for what it is good at, which is obvious in hindsight.

“Free tier is enough for occasional use”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
As a consultant I need current facts a few times a week, not daily. The free tier covers that comfortably and the citations mean I can drop a source straight into a client deck. I upgraded for two months during a heavy project and downgraded after.
