Claude

The assistant for long documents and careful writing

  • Anthropic · United States
  • Since 2023
  • 9 languages

Key takeaways

from our research

  1. The most reliable of the five at holding very long documents together across a conversation

  2. Output reads with less recognisable AI cadence — often editable rather than rewritable

  3. Pro is $20/mo, matching ChatGPT Plus; Max tiers are for daily heavy use

  4. No image generation and a smaller third-party ecosystem than ChatGPT

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 16, 2026

Claude is the specialist worth owning if your work involves long documents or writing that other people will read. In our testing it was the most reliable at holding a 60-page PDF together — summarising it, answering questions across sections, and not quietly forgetting the first third by the end.

The writing difference is real and hard to quantify. Claude's default register has less of the recognisable AI cadence than its rivals, which matters when the output is a client email or a policy document rather than a first draft you will rewrite anyway. Several of our reviewers describe editing Claude's output rather than rewriting it, which is a meaningfully different amount of work. Pro at $20 a month matches ChatGPT Plus; the Max tiers exist for people who hit limits daily.

The gaps are consumer-facing. Image generation is absent, the mobile experience is less polished, and the ecosystem of third-party integrations and community prompt-sharing is smaller than OpenAI's. If your assistant use is casual and varied — make me a picture, plan my holiday, transcribe this — ChatGPT covers more ground for the same money.

Our guidance: buy Claude if you work with long text and care how the output reads; buy ChatGPT if you want the widest capability for a single subscription. Plenty of our reviewers pay for both, and at $40 a month combined that is a defensible call for anyone whose job is writing.

The only one whose drafts I edit rather than rewrite

Used daily for 1–2 years

I produce long-form marketing copy and the difference in register is obvious after a week. Other assistants give me something structurally right that still reads like a robot wrote it. Claude gives me something I can cut two paragraphs from and send.

Handles our contract review workload properly

Used daily for 6–12 months

We push 40 to 80 page agreements at it and ask cross-referencing questions. It holds the whole document — clause four against clause nineteen — where other tools had clearly lost the early sections. That is the single capability we bought it for and it delivers.

Great for code review, narrower elsewhere

Used daily for 1–2 years

It reads a large diff and gives useful architectural feedback rather than nitpicks, which is genuinely rare. Outside engineering and writing the range is thinner than ChatGPT — no images, and the plugin ecosystem barely exists by comparison.
