from our research
Free plan supports up to 2 agents with real ticketing and a knowledge base
Growth at $15/agent/mo includes SLAs and automation that competitors gate higher
Reporting and marketplace depth trail Zendesk noticeably
Check Freshdesk vs Freshservice vs Freshchat carefully before buying — the lines blur
Our verdict
Freshdesk is the sensible middle of this category — most of what Zendesk does, at roughly half the price, with a free tier that makes starting risk-free. For teams who looked at Zendesk’s per-agent cost and flinched, this is the product to evaluate next.
The free plan genuinely works for a small team: email ticketing, a knowledge base and basic automation for up to two agents. Growth at $15 per agent per month billed annually adds automation, collision detection and SLA management — features that sit two tiers up at some competitors. Pro at $49 brings custom reporting, multiple products and round-robin routing, and that is where most mid-sized teams land.
What you give up is polish and depth at the edges. Custom reporting is workable but slower to shape than Zendesk Explore. The marketplace is smaller, so obscure integrations more often need building. And Freshworks’ own product boundaries can be confusing — Freshdesk, Freshservice and Freshchat overlap in ways that make it easy to buy the wrong thing or end up paying for two.
Our guidance: for a 5–40 agent team doing email and chat support where budget is a live constraint, Freshdesk is the best value in the category and the free tier means the evaluation costs nothing. Choose Zendesk instead if reporting sophistication or the app ecosystem is decisive, and Help Scout if you want something deliberately smaller.

“Two-thirds of Zendesk for half the money”
Used daily for 1–2 years
We evaluated both properly with a 30-ticket simulation. Day-to-day the agent experience is barely distinguishable; the gap is in custom reporting, which we needed less than we thought. Saving roughly $18k a year across our team made the decision easy.

“Free tier got us started properly”
Used daily for 6–12 months
Two agents, real ticketing, a knowledge base and no credit card. We ran on free for five months before upgrading, by which point we knew exactly which tier we needed. More vendors should do this.

“Good value, confusing product lineup”
Used daily for 1–2 years
The software is solid and the price is fair. Working out whether we needed Freshdesk, Freshservice or Freshchat took two sales calls and we still ended up paying for overlap in the first year. Worth getting that right before you sign.
