Help Scout
Customer support that feels like email
- Help Scout Inc. · United States
- Since 2011
Key takeaways
from our research
Customers never see ticket numbers or a portal — replies look like ordinary email
Fastest setup in the category; a small team is live the same day
Contact-based pricing suits low-volume, high-touch businesses better than per-agent plans
No voice channel and no SLA management — a real ceiling past ~10 agents
Our verdict
Help Scout is the best help desk for small teams who want support to feel human, and the fastest to get running of anything we tested. A three-person team can be answering from a shared inbox in an afternoon, with no ticket-number vocabulary imposed on customers.
The product’s discipline is its strength. The shared inbox, saved replies, a clean help center (Docs) and Beacon — the embeddable widget that surfaces articles before a customer writes in — cover the support job for a small company completely. Pricing is honest at $50 per month for up to 100 contacts on Standard, with per-contact plans that suit low-volume, high-touch businesses better than per-agent pricing does.
The ceiling arrives sooner than with the bigger platforms. There is no native voice channel and no formal SLA management. Reporting answers the obvious questions and stops. Automation exists but is nowhere near Zendesk’s trigger system. For a support organization with tiered escalation and compliance obligations, these are disqualifying gaps rather than annoyances.
Our guidance: under about ten agents, mostly email, and a business where tone matters — Help Scout will make your team and your customers happier than anything else here. Past that, or the moment you need phone support or SLA reporting, plan the move to Freshdesk or Zendesk deliberately rather than discovering the limits mid-quarter.

“Customers cannot tell it is a help desk”
Used daily for 1–2 years
That is the entire point and it works. No ticket numbers, no "your case has been updated" emails, just replies that look like a person wrote them. For a small brand where tone is the differentiator, this matters more than any feature list.

“Fastest setup of anything I have implemented”
Used daily for 6–12 months
Live in an afternoon with three agents, saved replies and a help centre. I have spent longer configuring views in other tools than I spent deploying this entirely.

“Hit the ceiling at about twelve agents”
Used daily for 2+ years
Loved it for two years. Once we needed escalation tiers and response-time targets we were working around the product rather than with it. Migrated to Freshdesk — a good tool that we simply outgrew, which is a fair outcome.
