Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Fin, the AI agent, is billed per successful resolution — economics depend entirely on your documentation quality

  2. The in-app messenger is the best product-embedded support surface we tested

  3. Seats from $29/agent/mo, but AI usage is the variable that decides the real bill

  4. No native voice channel; email-heavy and phone-heavy teams are better served elsewhere

Our verdict

Updated Aug 12, 2026Fact-checked Mar 18, 2026

Intercom is the best choice when your customers are inside your product and your documentation is good. Those two conditions do a lot of work. The messenger remains the most polished in-app support surface available, and Fin — Intercom’s AI agent — resolves a genuinely meaningful share of volume when it has real help-center content to draw on.

The pricing model is the thing to understand before anything else. Seats start at $29 per agent per month on Essential, but Fin is billed per successful resolution on top. That is unusual, and it cuts both ways: teams with thin documentation pay for seats and get little deflection, while teams with a mature help center can see resolution rates that make the per-conversation fee look cheap against a human reply. Model it against your own content honestly rather than against the vendor’s reference numbers.

Where Intercom is weaker is the traditional help desk job. There is no native voice channel, reporting is less flexible than Zendesk Explore, and teams doing heavy email-based B2B support often find the messenger-shaped model works against them. Costs also become unpredictable at volume in a way that seat-based competitors are not — several reviewers describe budget conversations they did not anticipate.

Our guidance: if you are a SaaS company with in-app users and you have invested in documentation, Intercom is the highest-leverage tool in this category and Fin is the reason. If you are supporting a non-software business, or your volume arrives by email and phone, buy Zendesk instead.

Fin pays for itself once your docs are good

Used daily for 1–2 years

We spent a month writing help centre articles before turning Fin on, and that sequencing made all the difference — resolution rate landed where we hoped rather than where we feared. The per-resolution billing is unusual but it aligns incentives honestly.

The AI copilot changed how new hires ramp

Used daily for 6–12 months

Even setting Fin aside, the copilot drafting replies from our docs cut new-agent ramp time from a month to about a week. Quality of the drafts is high enough that agents edit rather than rewrite.

Great for SaaS, wrong for us

Used weekly for 6–12 months

Beautiful product that assumes your customers are logged into an app. Ours email us from their phones and half the value evaporated. If you are a software company this is probably the best tool in the category; we were not the target.
