Grammarly
Writing support everywhere you type
- Grammarly, Inc. · United States
- Since 2009
Key takeaways
from our research
Works in place across email, Word, Docs, Slack and the browser — no copy-paste
Tone detection catches messages that read blunter than intended
Generative features are adequate but beaten by any general assistant
Access to everything you type warrants a security review at enterprise scale
Our verdict
Grammarly wins on a dimension none of the AI-first tools compete on: it is already wherever you type. Email, Word, Google Docs, Slack, LinkedIn, the CMS — the suggestions appear in place, with no copying into a separate window. For an organisation that wants every employee writing more clearly, that ubiquity delivers more real-world improvement than a better model behind a login would.
The core editing is excellent and has been for years: grammar, clarity, tone detection and concision suggestions that make ordinary business writing noticeably better. Tone detection in particular catches the email that reads as blunter than intended, which is a genuinely useful thing for a machine to notice. Business at $15 per seat with style guides and brand tones is well priced for what it does.
The generative side is the weaker half. It writes and rewrites competently but a general assistant does it better, and reviewers who expected Grammarly to replace ChatGPT are the disappointed group. There are also long-standing concerns about a tool with access to everything you type, which security teams should evaluate on the enterprise tier rather than assume.
Our guidance: buy Grammarly to raise the floor on writing across a whole company, not to generate content. It complements a general assistant rather than competing with one, and most of our reviewers pay for both.

“Raised the floor across 60 people”
Used daily for 2+ years
We did not need better writers, we needed fewer badly-written customer emails. Grammarly Business with a company style guide fixed that in a month, mostly because nobody has to remember to use it — it is just there in Outlook.

“The only writing tool nobody had to be told to use”
Used daily for 2+ years
We have bought writing tools before and watched them go unopened. Grammarly is simply present in the places people already write, so adoption was immediate and permanent. Our customer emails read noticeably better than they did a year ago.

“Useful, but I ignore half its advice”
Used daily for 2+ years
For catching genuine errors it is excellent. For style it wants everything shorter and blander, and if you accept every suggestion your writing loses whatever made it yours. Treat it as a proofreader, not an editor.

“Security review took longer than the rollout”
Used daily for 1–2 years
A tool that reads every text field in the browser is exactly the kind of thing our infosec team exists to question. Enterprise tier answered it — data residency, retention controls, SSO — but expect that conversation, and start it early.
