Key takeaways
from our research
Best cross-network reporting in the category — board-ready without rework
Smart Inbox handles genuine social customer-service volume
Social listening included on higher tiers rather than sold separately
Per-seat pricing from ~$199 makes it hard to justify below three social staff
Our verdict
Sprout Social is the best product here and the hardest to justify below a certain size. Its reporting is genuinely superior — cross-network, presentation-ready, with competitor benchmarking and paid-plus-organic views that go straight into a board deck without rework. For teams whose reporting is scrutinised, that saves real hours every month.
The Smart Inbox is the other differentiator. It handles high comment and message volume with assignment, collision detection, saved replies and SLA tracking — closer to a help desk than a social tool, and the only option here that supports genuine social customer service at scale. Social listening is included on higher tiers rather than sold as a separate product.
The price is the whole objection. Per-seat pricing starting around $199 means a five-person team is spending five figures a year, and additional seats do not get meaningfully cheaper. Reviewers consistently describe the product as excellent and the invoice as difficult, and smaller teams that bought it on a demo frequently downgrade within a year.
Our guidance: worth it when social is a staffed function with reporting obligations and real inbound volume. Below roughly three dedicated social people, Metricool delivers most of the reporting value for a fraction of the cost.

“The reports go straight to the board”
Used daily for 2+ years
Before Sprout I spent a day a month assembling social numbers into something a non-marketer could read. Now it generates and I spend twenty minutes on commentary. Over a year that is most of a working week back.

“Downgraded after a year”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
Bought it on a very good demo. Twelve months later we were using the calendar and about a fifth of the reporting for four figures a year. Moved to Metricool and have not missed the rest.

“The only one that handled our comment volume”
Used daily for 1–2 years
We get several hundred comments and messages a day across networks. Buffer and Later simply could not queue that. Sprout treats it like a support inbox with owners and SLAs, which is what it actually is.
