Key takeaways

from our research

  1. Templates constrain you toward a professional outcome — hardest builder to make ugly

  2. Scheduling, email, invoicing and commerce included rather than bolted on

  3. Best-rated support in the category in our review data

  4. Limited layout flexibility and no real export — leaving means rebuilding

Our verdict

Updated Aug 25, 2026Fact-checked Jul 12, 2026

Squarespace is the right answer for most small businesses because it makes a good outcome the default. Its templates are opinionated in a way that prevents the specific failure the category is known for — a site that technically works and looks amateur. In our build test it produced the most professional result fastest, and by a clear margin.

The bundle matters as much as the editor. Scheduling, email campaigns, invoicing and commerce are included rather than assembled from apps, so a consultant or studio can run a real business from one subscription. Support is consistently the best-rated in this category in our review data, which for a non-technical owner is worth more than a feature.

The constraint cuts both ways. Layouts outside what the template anticipates are awkward or impossible, and designers regularly describe hitting a wall that Webflow would not have. SEO controls cover the essentials and stop short of the redirect and structured-data control an SEO-led business wants. There is also no meaningful export — leaving means rebuilding.

Our guidance: buy Squarespace if you want a professional site quickly and your requirements are conventional. Choose Wix if you need unusual layouts or a specific app, and Webflow if a designer is driving and cares about the output.

A site that looks designed, built by someone who is not

Used monthly for 1–2 years

I run a small studio and needed something that looked considered without hiring anyone. Picked a template on Saturday, was live by Sunday evening, and clients regularly assume I paid a designer. That is the entire value proposition and it delivers.

The default we put non-technical clients on

Used weekly for 2+ years

Across about thirty client sites, Squarespace generates the fewest support requests by a wide margin. Clients update their own content without breaking anything, the sites look professional with almost no design work, and nobody has ever rung me about hosting.

We stopped offering it to SEO-focused clients

Used weekly for 2+ years

For a brochure site it is excellent and our clients can maintain it. For anyone whose main channel is organic search, the redirect and schema limitations become a monthly irritation and we move them to Webflow or WordPress instead.

Support answered on a Sunday

Used monthly for 1–2 years

Not a feature, but it is why I stayed. My checkout broke the night before a launch and someone competent replied within twenty minutes on a weekend. Every other builder I have used routed me to a forum.
