from our research
Drag-anywhere editor means the layout you imagine is actually achievable
App market covers long-tail needs — booking, memberships, ticketing, multilingual
AI site generator produces a genuinely useful structured first draft
Cannot change template after publishing without rebuilding the site
Our verdict
Wix is the most flexible builder here and the flexibility is genuinely double-edged. You can put any element anywhere, which means the layout in your head is achievable — and also that nothing stops you producing something misaligned and slow. Users with some design sense get more from Wix than from anything else at this price; users without it get a worse result than Squarespace would have given them.
The app market is the underrated advantage. Booking, membership, multilingual, restaurant ordering, event ticketing — the long tail of requirements that make other builders say no usually has a Wix app that says yes. Its AI site generator has also become a legitimately useful starting point rather than a demo, producing a structured draft site from a description in a couple of minutes.
Two long-standing criticisms persist and both have improved without disappearing. Performance is still typically behind Squarespace and well behind Webflow on mobile, because freeform positioning produces heavier pages. And you cannot change template after publishing without rebuilding, which catches out people who chose quickly. Renewal pricing also jumps sharply after the first term.
Our guidance: choose Wix when you have a specific requirement other builders cannot meet, or when you want maximum control without learning Webflow. Choose Squarespace if you would rather the software prevented your mistakes.

“The only builder that did what we needed”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
We run a studio with class bookings, memberships and a shop. Squarespace could do two of those. Wix does all three natively plus an app for the waiting list. It is not the prettiest editor but it is the one that said yes.

“Powerful, and easy to make ugly”
Used weekly for 2+ years
For clients with taste it is the best value in the category. For clients without, we steer them to Squarespace, because Wix will faithfully build whatever they imagine including the parts they should not have imagined.

“Renewal price was a surprise”
Used monthly for 1–2 years
The first year was cheap and the renewal was not. Read the second-term pricing before committing, and factor the apps too — three of mine are separate monthly charges that were not obvious at signup.
