Overview
What is Wix?
Wix is a website builder and domain registrar from Wix.com Ltd., which was founded in 2006 by Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami and Giora Kaplan and has its headquarters in Tel Aviv. Every Wix site runs on Wix's own servers. A site can stay on the free plan, with Wix ads and a wixsite.com address, or move to a Premium plan, which covers one site and is needed to connect a custom domain.
Sites can start from a template, of which Wix says it has more than 2,000, but can't switch templates later. In the Wix Editor, elements can be dragged freely around the page, and a separate mobile editor adjusts the phone layout without changing the desktop one. The Studio Editor, sold with its own plans, uses cascading breakpoints instead, and the Wix Harmony Editor, released in January 2026, adds an AI assistant called Aria but doesn't yet include the CMS or Wix Multilingual. Built-in apps cover blogging, Wix Stores, bookings, member areas and paid plans that gate pages, while CMS collections hold structured content and import and export as CSV.
The editors run in the browser. The Wix app for iOS and Android manages the store, bookings and blog. Payments go through Wix Payments or another provider, Avalara calculates sales tax, US stores can show live USPS shipping rates, and Wix Multilingual translates a site by hand or automatically. Premium plans bill monthly, yearly or every two or three years and renew automatically.

Wix suits small businesses that want to build a site themselves, put each element exactly where they want it, and add business features without plugins: stores, bookings, blogs, member areas and paid plans are all Wix's own apps. Its SEO settings cover canonical tags, structured data, an editable robots.txt and 301 redirects, which Wix adds automatically when a page's URL changes, and Wix Multilingual writes hreflang tags for each language. The free plan has no time limit, so the editor can be tried on a real site first.
Lock-in is the price. A Wix site can't be hosted anywhere else, Wix says blog posts can't be exported to other platforms, and only CMS collections leave as CSV files, so moving away means rebuilding. A template can't be swapped once the site exists. Custom code needs a connected domain, and analytics or pixel scripts have to go through Wix's marketing integrations. Wix's Generative AI Policy also lists user content such as images and page layouts as a source of training data.
The plans page shows only yearly prices, paid upfront, and monthly billing exists but isn't priced there. Light costs $17 a month on that basis, $204 a year, and can't take payments. Core costs $29 a month, $348 a year, and is where selling starts. Business, at $39 a month or $468 a year, is the plan to price for a store, since it adds automated sales tax for 100 transactions a month. On either plan a US store using Wix Payments pays 2.9% plus $0.30 per card payment other than American Express, and the plans page lists no Wix fee on store orders. Paid plans sold through Wix's Pricing Plans app carry a Wix fee of 4% on Core and 2% on Business. Premium plans have no free trial, only a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Choose Wix when the owner wants free-form layouts and needs bookings, a store or member pages in one place, and plans to stay on Wix. Squarespace suits owners who'd rather work on a grid and build the whole site before paying, since every Squarespace site starts with a 14-day trial. If leaving later matters, WordPress.com exports posts and pages as a standard WordPress XML file that other platforms can read.

Is Wix free?
Yes. Wix's free plan has no time limit and needs no credit card, and it includes the editor, templates, AI creation tools, 500 MB of storage and 1 GB of bandwidth. Free sites show Wix ads, use a wixsite.com address and can't connect a custom domain. Removing the ads and connecting a domain starts with the Light plan at $17 a month on a yearly subscription, though Light can't accept payments. See Wix pricing.
How much does Wix cost?
Wix's plans page lists yearly prices only, per site and paid upfront: Light costs $17 a month ($204 a year), Core $29 ($348), Business $39 ($468) and Business Elite $159 ($1,908). Monthly billing and two- or three-year terms are also sold, but the plans page doesn't price them. Enterprise is quoted on request. There's no free trial of Premium plans; new plans come with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and most yearly plans include a voucher for a new domain.
Does Wix charge transaction fees?
For store orders, Wix's plans page lists no Wix fee; the cost is payment processing, which through Wix Payments in the US is 2.9% plus $0.30 per card payment, or 3.7% plus $0.30 for American Express. Wix does take a fee on paid plans and memberships sold through its Pricing Plans app: 4% on Core, 2% on Business and none on Business Elite. The Light plan can't accept payments at all.
Can you move a Wix site to another platform?
Not as a working site. Wix sites run only on Wix's servers and can't be exported for hosting elsewhere, and Wix says blog posts can't be exported to other platforms either. CMS collections can be downloaded as CSV files, and Wix says the content you build belongs to you, but the design has to be rebuilt somewhere else. Does Wix use your content to train AI?
It can. Wix's Generative AI Policy, in effect since January 1, 2026, lists user-generated content such as images and page layouts as a source of training data, under the license users grant in Wix's Terms of Use. Keeping outside AI crawlers off a published site is a separate matter, and Wix's help center says it means adding robots.txt directives by hand.
