Webflow
Visual development for designers
- Webflow, Inc. · United States
- Since 2013
Key takeaways
from our research
Publishes genuinely clean, semantic markup — the fastest sites in this test
CMS is a real content model, not a blog with extra fields
Steep learning curve; assumes familiarity with box-model concepts
Site plans and workspace seats are billed separately — model the total
Our verdict
Webflow is the only tool here that a front-end developer would call a real implementation environment. You work with actual CSS concepts — flexbox, grid, positioning, breakpoints, classes — through a visual interface, and the published output is clean, fast, semantic markup rather than the nested wrapper soup other builders emit.
That produces two concrete advantages. Performance is the best in this category by a wide margin in our testing, which matters directly for SEO. And the CMS is a genuine content model — define collections with typed fields, template them once, and the site scales from five pages to five hundred without duplication. For a marketing site that needs to rank and grow, this combination is the strongest available without hiring a developer.
The learning curve is the honest objection. Someone who does not understand the box model will find Webflow bewildering, and our reviewers are unanimous that the first fortnight is hard. Pricing is also confusing: site plans and workspace seats are separate purchases, so the real cost for a small agency is higher than the headline. Client handover needs care, though the Editor role handles it better than it used to.
Our guidance: choose Webflow if a designer or developer is building and organic search matters. If the person building is neither, the learning curve will cost more than the performance is worth.

“Replaced our design-then-build handoff entirely”
Used daily for 2+ years
We used to design in Figma and pay a developer to build it. Now the designer builds it and the output is better than what we were getting. Our client sites went from mid-70s to high-90s on mobile Lighthouse without anyone optimising anything.

“The first two weeks are genuinely hard”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
I came from Squarespace expecting a nicer version of the same thing and it is not that at all. It is a front-end tool with training wheels. Once the box model clicked it became the best software I use; before that I nearly gave up twice.

“Chosen for SEO, kept for the CMS”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
We moved because organic traffic mattered and we needed clean markup, redirects and schema. We stayed because the CMS lets marketing publish 200 location pages from one template without touching design.
