Key takeaways
from our research
Statistical analysis, quotas and weighting no form builder here offers
Audience panel lets you buy responses from a defined demographic
Results carry research credibility with stakeholders
Clumsy and expensive for ordinary forms and lead capture
Our verdict
SurveyMonkey is what you buy when the output is a finding rather than a submission. Methodologist-written question banks, significance testing, weighting, quotas and cross-tabulation are genuine research capabilities that no form builder here attempts, and its Audience panel lets you buy responses from a defined demographic — useful when you need market data and do not have a list.
That research credibility carries weight beyond the features. Results presented as SurveyMonkey data are accepted by stakeholders in a way that a Typeform export sometimes is not, and its analysis tools produce charts that go into a deck without rework.
For everything else it is the wrong tool. Ordinary forms are clumsier to build than in Tally or Fillout, the interface feels dated, and pricing is high for what most people need — a serious plan runs $75 a month or more, and its own users frequently complain that useful features sit behind team tiers. Response limits also apply on lower plans.
Our guidance: buy it for genuine research — customer satisfaction programmes, market studies, anything where methodology will be questioned. For lead capture, bookings and internal forms, everything else here is cheaper and better.

“Bought for the panel, stayed for the analysis”
Used monthly for 1–2 years
We needed 400 responses from a specific demographic and had no list. Audience delivered them in two days. The significance testing then let us present findings that survived scrutiny from people who question everything.

“Wildly over-specified for a contact form”
Used monthly for 1–2 years
Inherited an account and used it for ordinary forms for a year. It is slower to build in, looks older and costs more than Tally, which does that job free. Kept it only for the annual customer survey.

“Stakeholders accept the numbers”
Used monthly for 2+ years
Presenting research from SurveyMonkey ends arguments that presenting the same data from a form builder does not. That is partly reputation and partly the methodology being visible, and both matter internally.
