Workato is what companies buy when automation stops being a productivity hack and starts being infrastructure. Its differentiators are unglamorous and decisive at scale: proper development, test and production environments with a promotion path, role-based access control, full audit trails, and connectors to the enterprise systems the SMB tools treat as afterthoughts.
The connector quality is the practical advantage. Integrations to SAP, NetSuite, Workday and Oracle behave like supported products with error semantics and pagination handled, rather than thin API wrappers you finish yourself. For companies where those systems are the point, that difference is measured in months of avoided integration work.
The price is the obvious objection and it is a fair one. Workato is sold on annual contracts starting in five figures, and for most companies reading this it will be dramatically more than the job requires. Reviewers also note that its recipe builder, while capable, is less pleasant than Make's canvas — you are paying for governance and connectors, not for the building experience.
Our guidance: relevant if you have enterprise systems, a compliance function with opinions, and automation that will be audited. Everyone else should buy Make or Zapier and revisit if that changes.

“The only one that passed our audit requirements”

We needed separated environments, approval before anything reaches production, and an audit trail showing who changed what. The SMB tools genuinely cannot do this. Workato could, and that ended the evaluation regardless of price.

“Right tool, painful price conversation”

It does what it promises and the connectors are genuinely better than anything else we tried against SAP. Justifying a five-figure annual contract to a finance director who has heard of Zapier is a specific kind of meeting, so bring the integration-hours maths.
