Key takeaways
from our research
One employee record drives payroll, benefits, app access and device provisioning
Offboarding revokes everything in a single action — a real security control
Modular pricing from around $8/employee/mo, quoted rather than published
Implementation takes weeks; overkill for small teams without IT complexity
Our verdict
Rippling’s pitch is that hiring and offboarding should be one action, not fifteen — and it is the only platform here that actually delivers that.
The employee record is the architecture. Adding a hire triggers payroll enrollment, benefits election, Google Workspace and Slack accounts, role-based app permissions, and a configured laptop shipped to their door. Offboarding reverses all of it in one click, which is a security control most companies handle with a checklist and hope. For a growing company with real IT surface area, that automation is worth more than any individual feature comparison suggests.
Breadth is genuine: US and global payroll, benefits, an EOR offering, device management, app provisioning, spend management and corporate cards. The modular structure means you buy what you need — and it also means the price is a quote rather than a number, typically starting around $8 per employee per month for the HR core with each module adding cost. Several reviewers describe the total as considerably higher than expected once modules accumulate.
The trade-offs follow from the ambition. Implementation is heavier than Gusto — expect weeks, not an afternoon — and the interface carries the density of a platform doing many jobs. Small companies without IT complexity pay for architecture they will not use. And the opaque pricing makes honest comparison shopping harder than it should be.
Our guidance: from roughly 50 employees, or earlier if you issue laptops and manage app access, Rippling’s consolidation genuinely pays. Below that, Gusto does the important part for less money and less setup.

“One click to offboard is worth the price alone”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
Someone leaves and their payroll, Google account, Slack, GitHub and laptop return are all handled in one action. We used to run a fourteen-item checklist and still missed things. That is a security control, not a convenience.

“Powerful, and priced like it”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
Every module is good. The total, once you have HR, payroll, IT and spend, is considerably more than the per-employee headline suggests. Get a full quote for the modules you will actually use before comparing to Gusto.

“Too much platform for our size”
Used monthly for 6–12 months
At 22 people with no laptop fleet we were paying for architecture we did not use. Moved to Gusto and lost nothing that mattered to us. Would revisit Rippling at 100+.
