Key takeaways
from our research
Fastest path to a working paid checkout in our build test
Acts as merchant of record — handles EU VAT and US sales tax for you
Transaction fees on lower tiers make upgrading pay for itself with volume
Course-building and marketing tools are plainer than specialist rivals
Our verdict
Teachable is the fastest route from having a course to being paid for it. In our build test it reached a working paid checkout quickest, and the reason is that it takes on the parts creators find hardest — payment processing, VAT and sales tax across jurisdictions, refunds and student accounts.
That tax handling deserves emphasis. As merchant of record on its payment options, Teachable calculates and remits EU VAT and US sales tax on your behalf. For a solo creator selling internationally, that removes a compliance problem most people do not know they have until it becomes expensive, and it is the single most-cited reason our reviewers chose it.
The cost is fees and ceiling. Lower tiers take a percentage of every sale — meaningful once volume grows, and the reason the upgrade often pays for itself. Course-building tools are competent but plainer than LearnWorlds, marketing features are thinner than Kajabi's, and heavy customisation is not really available.
Our guidance: excellent for creators who want to teach rather than administer a business. Choose Thinkific to avoid fees entirely, Kajabi if you want the whole business in one place, and LearnWorlds if the learning experience is the differentiator.

“Do the fee maths on day one”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
Starter looks cheap at $29. At £6,000 a month in sales the 7.5% fee was £450. Builder at $69 with zero fees was obviously right and I had been losing money for five months by not checking.

“They handle the VAT problem I did not know I had”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
I sell to about thirty countries. Working out EU VAT obligations myself would have been a nightmare and possibly a liability. Teachable being merchant of record means it is handled, and that alone is worth the fee.

“Fine for selling, weak for corporate training”
Used monthly for 6–12 months
We tried to use it for internal onboarding and it was the wrong shape entirely — no SCORM, no mandatory assignment, no compliance reporting. Moved staff training to TalentLMS and kept Teachable for our public courses.
