Key takeaways
from our research
Fastest working result in our build test — under two hours to a live portal
Sits on Airtable, Sheets or Postgres rather than owning your data
Permission-controlled client access is its core strength
Inherits the limits and speed of whatever data source you use
Our verdict
Softr is the fastest path from "we keep this in Airtable" to "our clients can log in and see it". In our build test it produced a working, permission-controlled client tracker in under two hours — the quickest of any platform here by a wide margin, and with the best-looking default result.
The design decision that makes it work is refusing to own your data. Softr sits on Airtable, Google Sheets, Postgres or its own database, so your team keeps working where they already work while clients and staff get a proper interface with role-based access. For client portals, member directories, resource libraries and internal dashboards, that model is close to ideal.
The limits follow directly. Complex multi-step logic is not really available — you can trigger automations, but conditional business processes belong elsewhere. Performance depends on the underlying source, so a slow Airtable base makes a slow app. And you inherit that source's limits, including Airtable's record caps, which several reviewers discovered late.
Our guidance: excellent for portals and internal tools built on data you already maintain. If your app needs its own logic and its own users doing complicated things, Bubble is the right ceiling.

“Client portals in an afternoon, not a quarter”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
Clients wanted to see their project status without emailing us. Our data was already in Airtable. Softr had a branded, permission-controlled portal live the same day, and clients assume we built something custom.

“Right tool once we stopped over-thinking it”
Used weekly for 6–12 months
We spent two months evaluating application platforms for what turned out to be a directory with logins. Softr did it in a day. The lesson was to size the tool to the problem rather than to the ambition.

“Hit the Airtable ceiling, not the Softr one”
Used weekly for 1–2 years
App was fine until our base passed the record limit and everything slowed down. That is Airtable's constraint rather than Softr's, but you inherit it, so plan the data layer before you build the interface.
